TTSX AND LRX

100% loss (x2) for me at the weekend and I bloody hate it. I mentioned this in another thread but shot a red calf and spiker, both quartering on and both went through rumen and diaphragm rending the carcasses unfit for sale. I'm still getting used to an Alpex digital scope, which is a love hate-relationship so far. What I'm finding is the digital image seems a lot "flatter" than through glass so it's harder to be clear on exact angle a deer is standing. This is the screenshot on the calf at the moment I took the shot (and zero since checked and fine). Spiker was similar. All I can think is I had 2 very unlucky deflections (unlikely!) or both deer were more quartered than I'd allowed for.

You have nailed my point completely… 100% loss…. I think you were pretty unlucky but the crosshairs is directly over the bone of the shoulder joint but that could result in a deflection

I hope this doesn’t come across as preachy or as if I’m decrying you, I’m not, as unless you lived the experience you can’t tell if there was a rush/excitement/just unsuitable. But at that range why wouldn’t you neck or head shoot them?
You would have to miss by a fair margin to blow the jaw at that range.

Not at all and in hindsight I wish I had but at the time I went for that placement as:
a) They were twitchy and aware something was up - they were already moving and kept milling around in front of each other and looked like they might bolt at any point.
b) I was out in the open on sticks behind a single tree and it wasn't the best shooting position - I was hunched up a bit awkwardly but couldn't move as they'd have been off.
c) I'm still not 100% confidence in the Alpex scope - not helped by this experience but I did put some shots down the range yesterday so that has given me some confidence back in it.

How much do you lose as a percentage when the bullet hits the rumen following a “behind the shoulder” shot which is on or immediately behind the vertical red line of the triangle in the picture above?
The goal is to miss both… obviously no one is perfect but it’s perfectly achievable most of the time on broadside animals. If they are quartering then I obviously have to break a shoulder

Going off tangent a bit ....
Wild boar / feral piggies whatever ypu want to call them.

Anyone using copper on them regularly
And as an aside anyone using a 6.5 calibre on them if so what?

Paul
i shall be this season, likely 120 gr ttsx (Swedish law demands a min of 120 i believe, otherwise i'd have considered 100s). I can report back with my findings later in the season, should you so wish 👍 🐗
