Turkish Kangals

Obviously not a deer dog but..

Ive always liked them, never been around one IRL. Articles and videos seem to be polarised regarding the breed.

Lots of dog database websites say hard to own, extremely stubborn, hours and hours of excerise per day required. Then there seems to be owners online saying they can be stubborn, but not really bad, low maintenance and quite happy with an hour or so of play and excerise.

Has anybody here owned this breed?

No but I lived ‘ worked in turkey in the early 90s We worked the goat farms and picked fruit we spent a lot of our time in the company of working Kangals . I will say they’re a strange dog but in a positive way though . They’re a VERY VERY independent bread they like to be on their own and be quite happy just watching if they want attention they will come to you otherwise we were told to leave them be . They’re a big dog too and I mean you have to see one in the Fur to really appreciate the size . I don’t think I would have one as a pet , they’re a dog that really needs a job and they’re waaaay over protective hense why they’re good at their job .

The Turks love them though and there are some great legends about them too . One very famous one we was told by the older folk . Had some great times there , loved the people and the place .

I only ever see these dogs as working companion goat / sheep dogs . What they’re like if they’re bought up in a different environment who knows .

Not sure they would need a great deal of exercise - they have been bred to chill out with sheep and then kill anything that looks sideways at them from a fox to a bear - sound like a complete nightmare.

Looks s like there are quite a few owners on YT with them and some good content.

Seen a few in the UK now and theyre not like the towering 90kg things Ive seen being shown off online, more like 40 to 55kg range

Thanks for the reply, not ignoring the rest of what you wrote.

From what I can read theyre more defensive than outwardly agressive.

Seems like theyre very friendly family dogs.

I’m not sure that I would quibble the nuances between being defensive and aggressive when one is chewing on you!

There’s quite a bit about them on Instagram too and very impressive creatures. The rewilders are suggesting that they will be good here ‘when’ we have wolves etc 🙄

Doesnt seem they are aggressive towards people at all, unless you break in of course.
