I think I should add that I’m fairly old fashioned in a few ways: I have a John Dickson boxlock 12/65 from 1906. It has been restored and has sleeved barrels. I find it a sport in itself using old guns for hunting/shooting.
(I was in Zimbabwe in 2018 and shot a tuskless elephant and a buffalo with another vintage rifle, a W J Jeffery 450/400 3» 1908 hammergun with top-lever. It delivered the message flawlessly. Frontal brainshot at 11m on the elephant, a quick right and left at 35m anchored the dagga boy on the spot a couple of days later. Only regret I have from that trip was skipping the Indian pit helmet. I used an Akubra felthat. Way to warm. Pit helmet would’ve been perfect, when temperature hit 40 C just after lunchtime, it was like walking around in an ashtray… walked 18kms through ravines with jess and whatnot the day I shot the elephant, late in the afternoon. I should have had the balls to bring the pit helmet. Now I will at least have the balles to wear the plus four!)
Being a landowner myself I’ve heard you can mix and match to your hearts satisfaction? Might go moleskin or corduroy for pants/plus fours. Whichever suits for a late season hunt? Weather in area from Nirmingham to Wales in October/November dictates warm clothes?
