Interesting that Those old Suhl guns are far stronger than any modern gun. They are almost giving them away in Germany due to going over to steel.
The chokes have to be reamed up, before using steelshot in them, that cost money, but as a toolmaker i could do it myself.
Mine used to have 3/4 and full chokes. Now it is double improved cylinder.
At first back in 1993 some hunters got their guns proofed to 1250bar, but nowaday noone botheres anymore, it is well known what guns can take it, and most important what can not.
Those old Suhl guns are traded here for around 800-1200 DKR = £100-150, depending on condition, so very cheap.
British guns are not known to be strong. I think it is because old British guns we see here seems to be made as light, handy and well balanced guns, rather than the old communist East German and Russian Baikal heavy guns.
At the end of day, dont use high pressure steel shot in old guns if you dont feel safe about it, here there are plenty of experienced gunsmith to ask, in other places the gunsmiths might not have 30 years of practical experience about it.
