Unlined waterproof smock

Dutch or German goretex military surplus jacket, they are the best value for money waterproofs and are truly breathable unlike many more expensive options. Only my humble opinion....
Ventile is great but expensive, im pretty rough on my kit so tend to go for the cheaper option.

Ventile or the Bergans equivalent is very good - breathable and keeps most of the weather out. It works by actually absorbing moisture which swells the fibres which then keeps the rain out. Where it doesn’t work quite so well is at around the freezing point where it goes stiff. But in snow it’s really good as well.

Ventile is great but it gets overwhelmed by persistent rain eventually. I have a Tilak Odin Mrs got me it. Great smock
I will trade letting some water in for breathable like Fjallraven- but that’s me

I have one of the short MTP jackets that I wear for dog walking when it’s tipping down. It is completely waterproof, though being short any runoff means wet legs.

Yep, I have a set of these waterproofs for motorbike, great and cheap off ebay.

I'm not sure where all the ventile love comes from.

I think it's actively dangerous. If you're in sustained rain or crawling, with persistent wind and temperatures below about 10C, it will chill you like nothing else. And you will get wet - very wet - in the end.

I had one nasty brush with hypothermia with that stuff, and would strongly advise against it if you're planning to use it for extended periods somewhere like the Highlands.

Summer use, or short periods on low ground or in sheltered areas, or use on days where the temperature is guaranteed to stay below freezing, then great. Otherwise - just no.

Do you submerge in a bucket or spray the aerosol version? I really dont want to ruin a fine gaberdine smock...!
I sprayed mine with air sprayer the ones you pump to create pressure 1 ltr of fabsil completely saturated then let it drip dry, hasn't let a drop of rain in since that was 4 months ago

Swedteam, I have the light smock they do it in Camo or just brown circa £180 decent waterproofing capability or the full Gortex version Titan smock bit heavier circa£400 but they were getting discounted down to £239 at Swilington’s
