Due to a permission with little vehicle access and what is pretty much a mile long straight stalk, ive been using a small 20 litre rucksack (roe sack inside) and sling recently.
Used it with two different rifles - one with a cwake claw and the other with a blaser sling - both worked fine. Found it actually made it a tad more comfortable as the ruck sack strap cushioned the weight of the rifle on the shoulder.
Never noticed any additional slippage or the rifle protruding off my hip but my rucksack is quite streamlined - suppose it will depend on the size rucksack your going to be using.
Having said that - even the roe sack was fine with a guest in it.
I use a Z-aim with a roesack but the cross strap can get caught when pulling it out so when in an area I might see a deer and have to react quickly I undo the cross strap, I just use it over rough/steep ground, climbing styles etc.
Niggleohs don't work at all with a sack.
The best solution I have found for the hill is a Vorn that combines the two.
I've used the Z Aim with a normal daysac and a full roe sack. Bino harness on first, then roe sac, then Zaim. My roe sac has a little clip that holds the strap as well as the wraparound. I don't use the waist clips until the sac is "full".
I know what Nick means, but I'm finding it ok
With no Z Aim availability I took the advice of @camo304 and bought a Top Notch.
Very well made with a quality wide leather pad, sits nicely over the rucksack straps, went out yesterday and never had a problem unclipping and mounting the rifle on sticks, the extra strap around the back wasn’t an issue and the rifle nestles alongside the rucksack and sits rock solid.
Brilliant concept and I can’t believe it’s took me this long to sort one out!!
Another good solution is the Kifaru Gunbearer.,,,, Google it. I've made a copy and it works keeping the muzzle up and forwards with the rifle tucked under your arm.
