Waitrose & Lead

on the off chance that anybody seriously thinks that lead in itself is not poisonous

whilst its unlikely to have a one off immediate fatal effect, even on a child, the accumulative effect is well documented

granted, most research has focussed on lead within paint, petrol, additives to wine etc. but there is no doubt that the metal itself is problematic and has been replaced with alternatives in most instances.
in addition to the plentiful evidence of lead toxicity from other sources, there has been some recent research has been into the amount of residual lead within shot game entering the food chain
so surely its no surprise that common sense and scientific efforts are increasing to minimise this route of exposure,

At present we have the opportunity to adapt and be involved in changes before they are forced on us, the scientific community have already made their mind up
and unless anyone can provide scientific evidence that in fact lead is not poisonous, the battle to use it freely, especially when introducing shot game into the food chain is lost, especially as there are readily available and effective alternatives?

Denial and finding conspiracy where there is none will do us as hunters no favours especially with a public that are ambivalent at best to shooting and hunting. Californian Hunters have had some time to adapt and conduct their own research, taking a positive approach to the issue, what is the problem with us doing the same here?

Again all very fascinating. Lead pipes very bad, plastic or alkathene pipes combined with introduced chemicals in water???
Chemical sprays in bread, sprays and waxing on fruit, mercury in fish.
There are definitely more things that are equally as toxic as lead.
Why worry about one when you have the choice of thousands.🌚

So because other problems exist we shouldn't worry about this (lead) one! Logic is clearly not your strong point!
You are fast becoming a troll and rather insulting. We can do without your continual sniping, so only
two words for you my lad and the second ones off.

I have also fed game to many friends and family without any comment about lead. But that is not the point. Waitrose presumably know their customer base better than you and if they think they have a better chance of selling more game if its lead free then that is what they are going to stock. Is the meat you are selling going to waitrose? No it is not because the presentation clearly said they only buy farmed venison. They have decided they don't want to sell lead shot game. End of story. I cannot understand how you can see this as a thinly veiled attack on shooting. The presenter, a hunter himself, clearly says they would like to sell more game. In what way is that anti shooting? Did you actually watch the video presentation?

From some of the posts on here it’s clear a lot haven’t watched the presentation.

Bryan your posts are spot on. Clearly a lot didn’t watch the presentation.

Waitrose are a slick sales organisation incredibly skilled at understanding their customers mindsets & demands.

Their customers are demanding lead free game as they see lead as a toxic substance with negative health & environmental impacts - two issues they consider when choosing what to buy for dinner.

Regardless of the rights & wrongs of this, as debated above, the customers perception is Waitrose’s reality & they will provide what their customer demands.

The chap was clear that game is a growing market & we should applaud Waitrose for supporting & promoting games as a great food. This will benefit us all if the demand breaks out of their stores & into the market we supply into & we should heed the message the customers want lead free.

There was nothing in this video that supports the ‘thinly veiled attempt to ban shooting”/ ‘thin end of the wedge’ viewpoint, in fact quite the opposite.

Theres a terrible C word that seems to inflame many on here to a rage & that is ‘change’. But watch the video If you haven’t - we should take a steer from its message & make a change to maximise the market for what we produce by providing what the purchasers of our produce demand.

Extremely well put.

There are a group of guys on this thread that would find something to moan about if they were in a suite at the Savoy with a million quid, Ms World, their bevy of choice and a Sky sports package.
The decision by Waitrose to develop a market for game is a GOOD THING, a VERY good thing for game shooting.
Game currently has no value and is virtually unsalable, it’s become a by product of the industry and here we have a major retailer willing to spend their own money to develop and market a line of products designed to appeal to an identified sector of the population.
Which is exactly what we have been begging for for at least twenty years.
And you guys are whining because you’ve been told that the target market segment is not at all keen on toxic chemicals their food so Waitrose won’t accept product containing lead shot?
It’s strictly business, you’re perfectly free to develop your own market along any lines you like but Waitrose has made a corporate decision, no lead and it’s not up for discussion.

And if Waitrose do develop the market further (A GOOD THING as stated above ;) ) then others will follow... M&S, Sainsburys, Tesco etc. And the only thing you can be certain of is they won't be insisting on game shot with lead.
This has been in the pipeline for at least a year, that’s when Waitrose announced that they wouldn’t be accepting lead shot game this season.
I suspect that you’re right, the other retailers will follow suit very quickly and there’s not a damned thing anyone can do about it.
Which is pretty much what I predicted at the time, wish I had as much success with the lottery or the gee gees.
