What 4X4

a 2013 Subaru Outback wagon.

Same over here - still not a pickup though. ;)

Registered businesses can claim back some or all of the 20% VAT if the vehicle has a payload over 1 tonne, (depending on percentage of business use).

Payload can also be important if the user wants to have the vehicle classified as 'commercial' for tax purposes, with some not qualifying once an aftermarket canopy is fitted:

"Under a separate agreement between Customs and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), a hard top consisting of metal, fibre glass or similar material, with or without windows, is accorded a generic weight of 45kg. Therefore the addition of a hard top to a double cab pick-up with an ex-works payload of 1,010 kg will convert the vehicle into a car (net payload reduced to 965 kg). Under this agreement, the weight of all other optional accessories is disregarded. HMRC has also adopted this treatment."

Toyota and Ford Ranger have the fewest issues by far. There were whole websites set up around engine failures in both the (early) L200s and Navaras. Probably fixed by now but enough to steer me towards the Toyota/Ford. I can't stand VWs so I'd avoid them too. Badly Engineered and less than zero customer service.

I bought a pre registered Hi-lux Invincible in July. Saved £4k on the price of a brand new one, only one month old with 5 miles on the clock. I asked about the HL3 as I didn't need all the spec as a shooting/day to day vehicle but they don't pre register that model and a new one actually came in more expensive than the pre registered Invincible.

Ive now done 6000 miles in it. I like every single thing about it except the power! It seems strangled for a 3l engine when trying to put the foot down and have been told by a friend its down to the euro emissions rating in that model so may looked at getting it chipped/mapped...

I went to the Toyota from a Landrover County 90, a 96' model. There is obviously no comparison regards comfort but what is very surprising is just how well the pick-up copes with muddy and wet fields and forestry. It still has the original road bias tyres on it and in low box 6" deep mud, wet grass on some really steep inclines, forestry machinery ruts etc have not stopped it. I would guess that ground similar to that is what most of us refer to when describing 'off road' therefore I would suggest that ground clearance aside any pick-up you go for will cope with what you throw at it.

Over the years I have had 3 land rovers, 2 Isuzus and an L200. Friends all run similar motors and the comment I keep hearing time after time is Toyota is the one to go for...

The Toyota dealer told me the power would be down on my 63 plate invincible mate but compared to the 60 plate one I just handed back it seems overall better in the power stakes ? Confusing one that.

p.s I know I have PM's from you and a few others will reply asap. stalking 6 days this week ;)

lads what about the new isuzu rodeo crew cab reportly near 40 mpg. i have the older one in 30ltr and never let me down its now got 129000 on it .

Does anybody lease their 4x4's on here, if so what prices do they come in that.
I ain't self employed so be for personal use. I'm thinking of a lease as I don't want to go down the second hand road and want a hassle free motor but in no way can I afford a brand new one.
I no basic do deals on new ones but do they do deals on lease versions.

No probs, catch up when you get a moment...

Very true but the lease that I have it's up to me if I service it or not,but this would affect the warranty if it is not done. It would all so affect the value at the end of the lease treat the truck well and the more you get at the end treat it badly and the less you get.
I had a brand new ford ranger 3.2 Ltd truck this year and had it on lease for the first time and I can not knock it.I pay £225 a month which is £2700 a year with no deposit,if I was to hand it back after the first year it would have cost £2700 if I had paid cash for the truck and went to sell it after the first year I am sure I would have lost more than £2700! This is the first lease I have had and would have another a brand new truck delivered to my door 3 year warrenty 15000 miles a year for £225 a month suits me. This is the second ranger I have had and does every thing if have asked it to do on and of road I drive to Italy twice a year and all ways go in the truck.

Could you pm me more of the finer details please about leasing 4x4's as its a path I'm thinking about as I can'tafforded new one.

Bought a 2 yr old Hilux Invincible in June and am quite pleased with it. No where near as capable off-road as the defender it replaced, but so much more comfortable getting to the places I need to go off-road!

Build Quality - Toyota
Engines - Isuzu
Handling - Nissan
Off Road - Any of the above with 4x4, LSD and ability to Lock diffs.
You pays your money and takes your choice.

Mpv's and Pickups are Two different beasts, you cant compare Defenders and the like with pickups, both built for different purposes.

Leasing can be bad when you come to hand the vehicle back. You will be hit hard with charges for going over agreed mileage, bodywork scratches and wear and tear to interior. All which can happen all to often if used as a stalking vehicle.

Having a truck on lease purchase myself there are pros and cons to owning and lease.
The mileage is set by you at the start I set mine at 15000 per year and as for wear and tear this is true but if you paid cash or had one on finance and treated it like a piece of cr@p you would all so get hit hard as you say.
Every other truck I have owned I have lost more in the first year than the amount that I am paying on lease at the moment. Since having my truck I went for a new car both Ford and VW seem to have gone down the personal lease purchase.
