What is the fascination with short barrels in the UK

I been speaking to a mate in the States, in fact going through what calibres are available over here and whats on sale as I ma thinking of getting rid of my .270 and .243 and we come to the conclusion that Uk has a fetish for short barrels and how much muzzle velocity is lost by shortening them

Thoughts.

Probably alot to do with the moderator fetish.....
Regarding velocity loss, as you probably well know, some cartridges are more forgiving than others, the 308w being a prime candidate. Others like 243,6.5x55,270w and 30-06 perform better with longer barrels, although homeloading can adjust powders/charges to reduce muzzle blast and ensure full powder burns.

From what I have read people seem to enjoy getting in close " The Stalk" so having a short barrelled rifle with less thump would not matter so much....

One or to do it and the others followed....Like changing chokes for each clay stand or lining up the writing on your cartridges in the chamber lol

The opposite is in the shotgun world with expended choke and long barrelled cannons 32/34" quite common.

Alot of the doghandlers here favour short barrelled moderated "tracking" rifles for hunting and/ or following up wounded game.

what pains me is people buying calibres like 7mm rem mag, 7x64, 270 in barrel lengths so short the velocity that makes them actually perform well compared to others, is entirely lost...and in turn, you're left with a bigger case, more powder, more barrel erosion, more recoil, more noise, etc...for what, the same performance you could have had if you bought a .308 or 8x57?

There's a reason stutzens are traditionally made in certain calibres, those that work with short barrels.

These days manufacturers believe (probably quite rightly so) that consumers are f*cking daft, and therefore offer a selection of calibres/chamberings in short barrels (one reason being,,,it's cheap!)..so people think for months and months, go on forums, research, god knows what and how much time they put into selecting a calibre and chambering that's perfect, little do they realise that their 18" 7mm RM actually underperforms (on various levels) a bog standard .308..DOH!

short barrels are also not helped by this odd phenomenon of people using moderators,,I can't personally get my head around it and why the hell you'd carry that type of sh*te around on the end of your rifle, but hey ho. so yes, short barrels helps people avoid the witches wand syndrome.

So when the US chap asked why we have such short barrels over here, it's not only a moderator thing but also that a lot of people here simply don't get the point that certain calibres and chamberings need a specific barrel length for burning powder, as well as hitting their sweet spot performance segment which differentiates them above their smaller siblings.

Being 5ft 4ins. Don't really want a long barrel and moderator. Mine are 20" to 22" long. Recent 243 blackwolf has 24" barrel. But got that off set by using a pes scout mod. So not tooooo longggg.

Check out a ballistics app and run the figures 300 yards and in.

20-25fps are lost per inch on short action calibre and to be honest a Short barrel isn’t an issue.

I run 18” .243 and .308 barrels on my Blaser R93 and I have also got a 16” .308

I run a mod because I don’t like having to put hearing protection on when taking a shot. Yes a mod still isn’t officially hearing safe but hey it’s my life.

I used to shoot a short 19 inch 6.5x55 which I never really liked as it felt too short

I now shoot a 7x64 with a 23 inch barrel and it’s great I’ve thought it’s a bit long even with a mod

yeah but take a 7m RM for example, it's closer to 30fps lost per inch, and they should be min. 26" barrels..so take an 18" barrel, that's 240fps lost as well as all the bad sh*t that goes with it, recoil, throat erosion, powder cost, barrel life, noise, muzzle flash, etc. etc. so for a 160g'er, who would want to deal with a 7RM's bitchiness for around 2750fps?...you could load a gentle 7x57 to that!

I concur magnums should be loooong.

Always have liked stutzens, easy to handle, no detriment at all to taking any deer, fox, goat, even when necessary at extended range. Lightweight to carry on the hill & easily manageable in brush/woodland.
What’s not to like!

Going on the moderstor theory . A moderator lasts longer and peforms better with a longer barrel .

I have a non reflex mod on my .243 which has a 24 inch barrel and I get goot speeds from 100gr what lets it down is twist rate not length so it is fussy over ammo.

Run your rifles through a chrono the run you ballistic app . I have seen ammo running hundreds of fps below what it says on recipe sheets all because of barrel length

Surely it's the Americans that have the short barrel fetish?

The standard British stalking bolt rifle barrel was pretty much 24". The standard Europen hunting bolt rifle barrel 23.50"...a good round 60cms in metric.

Of course there are/were exceptions. But generally 24" or 60cm was the common length for many such here.

Yet many American standard deer bolt rifle barrels are 22". Something to do with rifle scabbards and horses apparently?

As PKL says. Why? Ruger M77 rifles in .270 WCF had 22" barrels in the standard factory offering. What's the point? Just daft!

Barrel length shouldn't be a "fashion" thing. It's physics. There is a correct barrel length for a given chambering and barrel length.

You choose the calibre, the chambering, the bullet weight you want to use, the right powder for the combination and the velocity it runs it and the right barrel length will take care of itself.
