What optics for .17hmr?

Hi all

I have a decent .17HMR rifle Anschutz and am looking to upgrade the scope (Currently an old Busnell 3-9x40) that was on a .22.

I am looking for a mid range scope priced say between £200 - £400. The spec has to be 50mm objective and in the range 4-12 magnification. I have been looking at Bushnell, Leupold and Nikon.

I have a Schmidt & Bender for my .243 which is great but do not want to outlay for a scope that does not have to put up with recoil, just the best option for clarity and light transmission for the money.

Any ideas??

Thanks in advance

You dont need much scope for head shooting bunnys in HMR ranges. I had a MTC Mamber on my scope for 4 years and took pleanty of bunnys with it in all light conditions and under the lamp.
I am sure you will get a perfectly useable scope in that budget. Myself I prefer vari mag but others swear buy fixed mag !
Also worth considering MTC and Hawke.

A Meopta Meopro 4-12X50 makes an ideal HMR scope. You don't need parallax adjusrment, high mag or a 30mm tube when all your shooting will be between 50 and 150 yards. But you do need bright clear glass to hit a 1" target at 150 yards against a drab background at last light. If you can't run to a Duralyt a Meopro will do that job perfectly at around £380.

I have got a leupold vx1 on my hmr and it does the job ok that's about it nothing to get excited about.

Thanks lads. Meopta sounds interesting but reviews are scarce and not heard to much about them. Read company history and watched some sales guy on you tube but nervous obv in a brand I know little about. They have been going 80 years apparently.

Any ideas as to the quality compared to other brands? Is it on par with s&b or lower end say like hawke? If I'm investing in an relatively unknown optic for that money I presume they are competitive to push their own brand to a wider market as opposed to manufacturing for other makes of optics.

once again your advice is very much appreciated.

Ive got a Hawke Nighteye 4-16x50 on my CZ 455 in 17 and i can report It's fine for the job. Bunny bashing at up to 200 yards at less than ideal light conditions is easy as pie. The ranges of the HMR are hardly far enough to truly test your optics. Just to put this in perspective, I have a S&B PM2 on my .308 which i regularly use at over 600yds on the range, so I consider myself fairly versed in the respective qualities of glass, not just some tight bloke!

All the best

I use a Meopta as said previously. Now we all bang on about our scopes but unless you test them against others then it is just retoric. I was in the good position to test quite a few scopes and my conclusion was it is not as good as your swaro/Zeiss etc etc but it isn't far behind. If you shoots lots of deer then buy the best of the best. I would put the Meopta as a close second best. It is streets ahead of a HAWKE.
It has excellent light gathering properties and whilst others can't see anything, you will still be able to identify and shoot easily. Looking through a scope during the day isn't much use as far as I can tell, except to see definition, it is at dusk you need to look through them.
the only down side to the Meopta is that they are not very good with nightvision.. Oh well can't have everything.

Agree with Singing Stalker. A Meopta isn't a Zi or a Victory but its closer than the price difference would suggest. In other words, they offer a lot for the money. I've compared my Meostar on 7 mag against a 7X56 S&B in the field when I took a guest stalker out who had one. We swapped rifles at various points and neither of us could split them for clarity or light gathering. I preferred the Meopta's finer reticle, he preferred the fatter stadia of the S&B in low light. So reticles are a matter of personal preference, or of preferring what you're used to.
Hawke, I think, are the best of the cheapies, but I agree they're not a match for Meopta. I had a Nite Eye on my HMR, which admittedly isn't Hawke's top model, but I thought it was a good little HMR scope. Then I bought another scope for my .222 and the Meostar went on the HMR. Shooting the same ground in the same conditions the superior optics of the Meopta were obvious from the start. My range at last light was extended and I wasn't struggling to find with the scope rabbits which I'd spotted through the bins. On one occasion a rabbit popped its head up in some wheat about 80 yards away as I watched through the bins. It was very dark, right on the point of giving up and going home. It looked through the bins as if something was in the way of the rabbits head. It didn't look right. I looked through the scope on 8 power and there was definitely something there but I couldn't make it out. I wound it up to 10 power to try and get a better look expecting everything to go dark, but it didn't. I saw clearly a dock stem in front of the rabbits head. I moved a step to one side and shot the rabbit. I'd have never got away with winding up the mag on the Hawke, a black fog would have come down. The Meopta has stayed on my HMR ever since.

Thanks for the info. its much appreciated. I looked into Meopta and very nearly bought but thought Id dig harder into my pocket and go for a Zeiss Dutalyt 3-12x50. There was 150 quid in it between the two so opted for the scope I can transfer if needed etc. Thanks again!

Considering all the issues with ammo lately, these are probably the best optics for a 17 HMR right now...
