Which chronograph to get

Magnetospeed no screens and will do subsonic stuff too.
Superchrono is limited in use, will not do owt but supersonic measurement.

Magnetospeed that's the one that look like a bayonet!
Thats pricey too! I didn't think they would cost that much. I don't need to test subs! I don't have any or plans to make any nowadays!
So,
I won't use it much! I don't want to spend to much to be honest!
Is there any one who will let me borrow or rent one for a while!

I was thinking of getting a Magnetospeed next trip to the US but saw they won't work with cast boolits, a lot of my shooting is indoors so jacketed bullets are not allowed. One of my clubs has a Chrony with the external readout and diffusion screens, most of the time it works OK.

They work fine with 40 grain 22 subsonics, at least mine does.

Sorry, should have explained that better :)

It was the reduced reliability using a combination of lead boolits and speeds under 1000fps that put me off it, all my indoor subsonic loads are around 800-900fps.

I have lead bullets record every time down to 600 fps and also checked air rifle with normal pellets down to that speed - the chrono did not miss one shot.
I have not noticed 'reduced reliability' as yet, the one caveat is that you do need to set up sensitivity of the chrono (which is easy enough to do).

Shooting chrony do a few different models. I've heard results from a lot of makes can vary if you don't spend a lot of money on one (£300+) but I don't have any complains with the Alpha Chrony that I have.

This is the one that we use at the club http://www.midwayuk.com/CED-Millennium-2-Chronograph-System

Because it's an indoor range we have the infrared skyscreens. Not cheap but excellent and hasn't given us any trouble over a period of four years or so. A much cheaper Chrony model that we had previously just didn't work reliably partly because of the light flicker from fluorescent lighting. Also it was one of those where the display was just below the screens so required a pair of binoculars to read the display from the shooting bench if others were using the range at the same time.

I have Magnetospeed and an Oehler 35p

Both are excellent Chronographs

Ive owned a CED briefly - it was a pile of cxxx

Buy once, cry once (or in my case twice)

The magneto was bought to save me time setting up and testing, it literally takes a minute to set up the bayonet and start shooting.

Don't buy the magnetospeed. Mates has broken twice and he discovered through forums that it's a known fault. All the chronys that record the flight of the bullet over a light sensor can be a right pain in poorlight conditions.
I use an acoustic chrony which records the sound of the bullet as it passes over.I chose it because it's light, hand held and can be placed anywhere along the flight path of the bullet. So I can measure the velocity anywhere from 20yds out to any distance. The detection envelope is huge, especially when you consider that of a conventional chrony and it will work in any weather or light conditions.

The World’s First Acoustic Shooting Chronograph!

buy it from the folks at Shooting SHED

here's a video of it in use:

Whats the "known" fault?

Ive had a Magnetospeed V2 for the last 12 months, used it three or four times a month on numerous calibre's I shoot and on othe rifles Ive built / developed loads for, its never failed.

The only part ive changed was the strap, which was upgraded foc.

It works in all weathers, light, dark, works with subsonic ammo and virtually any barrel diameter..,,,,,and you dont need a tripod to use it,,,,,and can read in real time the velocities....

Yeah they appear to be quite reliable, I would imagine it's just a bit of bullshizen being bandied about...

Funny it's always a 'mate'

+1 never had a problem with mine indoors or outdoors and never heard of any "known" faults, obviously the rumour must be shop counter talk from someone who hasn't got a clue how to use one

The Steinert SuperChrono doesn't work with subsonic bullets, it needs the supersonic shock wave to detect. Also doesn't seem to be available at the moment, certainly not on Shooting Shed or Dansk Gevaer web sites.
