Wierd Beer (or cider)

I think the best some of the best ones I've had are -

Wander Beyond - La Catrina. A chocolate and vanilla 11% Imperial Stout with ginger and a hint of chilli.

Wander Beyond - Octopod. A Mango and Passionfruit 12% milkshake DIPA.

Northern Monk/Evil Twin - Even More Death.

Tailgate - Watermelon Wheat. Not outstanding but extremely refreshing.

Polly - A Passion For Fashion. A Mouth puckeringly sour gose packed to the nines with 115kg of fresh limes, a kilo of Anglesey sea salt, and just a sprinkling of lime zest to boot.

@Eric the Red did I give you a Lime from Polly?

I would say that if you do want to try some different beers that have different flavour combos then avoid the supermarket collabs (apart from the Vault City Triple Mango Sour 6.2%).

Some are ok from Tesco and it's helped the spread the craft beer scene in the UK. Have a look online at what brewers like Wander Beyond, Vault City and Northern Monk, Vocation, Polly, others do.

Places like House of the Trembling Madness is is good place to find something to try.

You will, inevitably, come across some absolute sh*tters when trying all these beers but it's great when you find the good ones.

Places like Untappd will give you a good idea if they're well made or just a standard pale with cheap added flavours.

This summer I had a couple of 20L pins of cask ale that had been brewed to utilise the natural wild yeast in the air.
The brewery is housed in an old farm outbuilding and the brewer told me that he got the idea whilst watching clouds of pollen being wafted from the elder flowers.
He started the brew off by using a classic EPA yeast and then moved the brew outside and just loosely covered it with a cloth, two days later and the fermentation was progressing like a volcanic eruption.
The brew was called Wild Wood and came from The Crafty Monkey Brewing Co situated a short way from Hartlepool, initially it took a bit of getting used to but once tapped it began to mellow, I enjoyed it that much that I had a second pin a couple of months later.
It was a one off and can never be truly recreated as there is no knowing what yeast was responsible.
🍺😋👍

Here’s to true craft brewers keeping the cask ale tradition alive.

That's how they make Lambic beer, @TringSaint & @Essexsussex favourite tipple.

Not a beer or cider, rather a liquor. May be the most disgusting flavor on the planet - alcoholic beaver glands.

I have trapped and killed a lot of beaver, and the castor smell is not unpleasant in its place but concentrated in the mouth it’s horrid. Even a bit of beaver meat tainted by a knife that’s touchéd a castor gland can be unpalatable

Had similar in Latvia. Takes some getting used to!!!!.

I violently disagree with every one of those except the northern monk stout!

Interesting and innovative, yes. Palatable? Questionable…

But the fun is in the exploration 😁

All of these ‘flavoured’ beers do nothing for me.
The flavour should come from the hops, yeast and malt, not a bloody watermelon, imho!!

I like those too, I just like stouts brewed with vanilla etc.

This weekend gone I was on Timothy Taylor Landlord, Fullers ESB and some local casks at the pub.

TTL and F ESB are both nice pints.
Maybe I’m just an old fart who likes traditional type beers!!

I'll be giving some of these a try. I tend to agree about the supermarket options. I just saw the Aunt Bessies logo. My first thought was Yorkshire pudding and gravy. I'm not sure if that would have been better.

I see them as a different drink to be honest. I do also like a regular beer but it's nice to have a different option.

I think the Wander Beyonds and the Even More Death will be out of production but they'll have some new variants.

My GF had the one you tried and the Jam Rolypoly, they didnt do much for me but it's just nice to have a selection in the supermarkets.

Get on The House of Trembling Madness, treat yourself.

I never saw this myself, but working with a colleague in the early 90s, he told me of a draught ale in Hull or Grimsby that before serving had half a herring dropped into it!
Dont know if anyone has heard of such a thing. I cant find any trace of it on the interweb. But not suprised as it must have tasted bloody awful.

A Rollmop Martini, hmm!
