"I always think I am from the 17th century", said Smith. "I have no interest in technology, or to rush, rush, rush through life. I like to take time to smell the roses and the buffalo dung."
One of my most memorable days loading was in Yorkshire, with Wilbur Smith one side of my then...now dead...boss, and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa on the other.
Smith was being looked after by a long since ex-colleague by complete chance, both of us a long way from where we had served together.
One of the girls doing lunch hurtled into the nearest town and bought as many Wilbur Smith books as she could find and he gladly signed them.
Memories.
I met him 3 times once in Joburg airport once in London one once in cape town.
He was a quiet unassuming man and he had a good chuckle when I told him his writing had cost me a fortune in trips to Africa.
I have read all of his books at least 6 times and I will miss him and his scribblings as he put it.
Rest in peace man and thankyou
