Wild Boar Course Extra Material

BLUF:

I’m using my MoD learning credits to take a BASC Wild Boar course in Sep.

I’ve downloaded and printed all the course material and will read it on holiday so I don’t arrive unprepared.

The only aspect I’m struggling with is sexing and ageing.

I understand the basics i.e. males are generally bigger.

Is there any UK specific material that explains the differences in sex and ageing for native animals (there’s lots of US stuff out there)? Preferably with photos / pictures.

I’m thinking something like the sort of flash cards I used to use pre-DSC1 for the deer ID test (can’t recall where I got them from now).

Don’t mind paying for the right thing.

Google hasn’t proven very helpful.

Any steer?

K.

Significantly different shapes, just get loads of boar, sow and juvenile pictures

Why would you need to take a course to shoot them? They have no season also shot with a AOLQ condition.
The reading blurb looks more like a management guide when they have no season lol

I don’t need to do a course, more of a want to educate myself at 20% of the full cost thanks to the MoD. It’s a use it or lose it basis annually. Last year I did the HAD course a function I’m committed to fulfilling on MoD land (in my patch). I’ll probably never join a civilian police HAD scheme. Boar aren’t a species I know much about (other than they can be very dangerous) I just want to know more.

Hi, I did it last year and have two of the books recommended, you are welcome to them when I get back to UK next week. Tony

Yes please Tony - I’ll PM you to sort payment / postage etc. Thanks! K.

Males have a large hump on their shoulders and on their nose, a females nose is much straighter from a side profile. There’s a section on it on the course

Sat the course with Paul Hill last (Corinium) week. I enjoyed it immensely and feel far more confident if I were called to cull Boar on the MoD Estate or within a sporting/cull setting.
