Woburn Abbey's Big Boy

Anyone else surprised to learn from countryfile that Woburn have the stag (Big Boy)with most points(40) still alive? even though he is not their oldest Stud Stag.
i knew they held some superb Gold/World records but thought that 32 points was their max. i was also surprised to hear that NZ holds the record for most points on a wild beast. Can this be confirmed by any of the Pro's here?

Just out of curiosity what trophies do you gents have on your walls (red only) that are up there with the big guns? and what areas (geographical) and dates would these trophies have come from. interested to see any big differences between park and wild regarding antler weight and size

I have been told (by a Kiwi) that there is a practice in NZ where they nick the growing velvet antlers with a blade to induce "more points"

The World renowned Woburn Red Deer Farm was set up in 1993, with a long term vision of maximising the potential of the Woburn Red Deer genetics.

Amazing Antlers

The Red Deer have been at Woburn Park for over 150 years and are revered for the quality of their antlers. At Woburn Deer Farm, we are now able to selectively breed these deer and the results have been outstanding. Woburn have held 3 world records with SCI and CIC.

Our aim is to breed with only the very best Red Deer taken from Woburn Park and continue to produce some of the biggest antlered Red Deer in the world.

Woburn Deer Farm ~ Red Deer Genetics

I've been to woburn a couple of times once to stalk and once to have a day with the keepers. Their stags are huge. Their farm stags are unbelievable as well as the park stags, some of which are over 40 points. Some monsters in there. Found a few barashinga antlers in their private collection hidden from the public. They've a great range of species and huge stags.

The world record, so called wild Red Stag that was shot some years back was taken in New Zealand by an American. It was displayed at the SCI convention in Reno I believe as a full mount. This was a few years back.

Only thing was the stag 3 years previous to this was in a quarantine pen in the UK before being shipped to Germany and then eventually sold on to the Kiwis and released as it was firing blanks and was too aggressive.

A good many of these monster Red Stags are taken form British blood stock, and semen from these stags fetch high prices and is exported to artificially fertilise hinds in many parts of the world. Its been going on for years.

I think you may find that the flow of semen is now the other way round, as in NZ genetics now coming back to bolster U.K bloodlines.

Perhaps it's just me, but having been to Woburn and had the tour of the deer and the breeding program I found it all a bit distasteful. The Stags looked ridiculous, bred by man specifically to have obscenely large antlers so we could profit from them and feed our trophy hunting egos. They looked entirely out of proportion. The Royals and Imperials I have seen and photographed in Scotland look far more majestic and better balanced. Woburn was a freak show in comparison.

They had a waiting list at Woburn with over 25 names on it. The list was for the right to shoot one of the big boys when he reached the end of his useful life. The "stalk" involved driving up to it in the passenger seat of the stalkers vehicle and slotting it off the wing mirror. For the privilege they were being charged £25k. The stalker didn't get the motivation of those who wanted to do it but from his perspective it helped pay for the park and the genetics program.

Do we really need to interfere with the genetics of reds quite that much? Are we really that driven by the size of our "Trophy" antlers?

Maybe I'm the odd one?

There has been quite a lot of Wapiti blood infused into some of the NZ lines also. But then the original reds in Europe were infused with MaraL blood via German lines a few centuries ago also.
