Zeroing New Sako A7 .243

Earlier in the week I reserved a Tikka T3 Light in .243 just waiting for the variation to come through. I tried in the shop alongside the Sako A7 and at the time, preferred the feel (and price) of the T3. Going into collect yesterday, I just thought I'd try the two alongside each other again and was glad I did. No doubt the T3 is a very fine rifle, but for me it felt like the Sako had the edge, with the added benefit of the ability to load the magazine through the open bolt. Already owing a Sako Quad in .17 HMR, it was also nice to be able to stick with the same maker.

Just back from zeroing today and I am indeed very relieved I didn’t opt for the T3. The A7 handles like a dream and the ability to load through the open bolt is so much easier than having to remove the mag each time. I fired 55 rounds and by the end she had consistently settled to ¾ inch at 100 with 90g Sako Gamehead Soft Point’s. I also tried the Hornady 95g Custom SST and apart from a slightly different MOA, I couldn’t split them, both as good as the other. Whilst the “boom” of the larger calibre is clearly a lot louder than the HMR’s “crack”, it doesn’t appear to have affected my hearing/tinnitus quite the same, so great news all round.

Next week (or possibly evenings this week) I’ll be looking to plot the MOA at 50m, 75m, 150m, 200m, 250m and 300m and after that, move onto sticks in advance of my first stalk for 18th October. Although I have deferred DSC1 until February, my mentor has kindly lent me his manual which I'm steadily working through. My mentor has also very kindly offered to come and show me how to properly prepare the carcass, should the stalk be successful (I'm hoping to serve a joint of venison from my first stalk for my 40th birthday family meal on the Sunday).

Sincere thanks to SD for all the help and advice getting me this far.

I have the A7 in 22-250, absolute dream to shoot. Mine likes the Hornady 50 grn 3/4 inch straight out of the box.
Ive put in for a Tikka T3 in .204 also

Nice wee write up!

I zeroed my .270 A7 stainless today with similar results. I broke it in with some Norma 110gr Vmax (as their cheap) followed by some Norma 130gr soft points - seems to like both equally.

Thanks gents and brilliant to see so many other A7 owners "coming out" :D I searched for A7 threads to see what the consensus was before purchasing and didn't find many positive comments. Seems many have been hiding their lamps under bushels and the A7 has a following after all :-D

On negative experienced was the heat/mirage effect through the scope after even just a few rounds. Is this normal / common to most guns?

I am not suprised you saw a heat haze coming off it after putting 55 rounds through it.
I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination but the barrel on a sporting rifle will get very hot even with a few rounds through it.
When ever I have zeroed I have just put 3 rounds through it then waited for the barrel to cool a bit.

Thanks for the reassurance Bob (and hogey), I was just surprised to find it happening after even just 3-shots. Now I see why sporter barrel magazines are 3 rounds vs. varmint 5 (at least on the T3) :) I'll use the opportunity to get some exercise and wander up to the target between 3-shot groups in future :tiphat:

That is what I've been considering to upgrade from a T3 .243...what kind of grouping are you getting? Worth the extra over a stainless T3?

Cheers.

I doubt there'll be any difference in accuracy between the two to be honest.

Prone off the bipod at 100 yards, Norma 110gr VMax are averaging 0.7" and Norma 130gr Soft Points 0.85" (over 3 shots). I'm happy enough with that for now. I'd hope to see a small improvement as the rifle settles down and I adjust to it.

The A7 has had some pretty harsh criticism on here for being too similar to a T3 and not as good as an 85. Here's what I think....

The Stock
Having the soft touch coating is much nicer to handle than the T3. It's still just a cheap injection moulded job - but then so is the 85's.

The Magazine
Is slicker to load and definately feeds more smoothly than the T3 being steel lined. I'm not really fussed with the "total control latch" thing, but like that the mag release lever is both stainless and better proportioned (ie bigger!) than on the T3.

The Action
Is nice. Stiffer bolt lift than the T3 for sure, but the rifle's new and I expect this will ease a little with time. I like the two postion safety with seperate "safe unload" button.

The Plastic Bits
Bolt shroud, bottom metal and magazine are where the money's been saved. I don't mind - others do.

Overall
I'm happy. It costs more than a T3 and less than an 85, and has features and characteristics of both. I couldn't find a factory rifle I liked more than the A7 for the money.

Cheers.

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated. I was considering a T3 in Laminate stainless in .270 but I think the synthetic A7 would soak up more recoil up than the wood option. How's it feeling shooting it? What mod did you go with?...as I'll be changing up from my Predator 8 which will be going with the .243 come trade in time.

Regards.

I think you're right about the laminate vs synthetic stock in terms of felt recoil.

I'm using a Hardy Gen 4 mod which by itself is light enough not to upset the balance too much. Combined with a Harris (ultralight?) bipod it's a little tip heavy. It still feels "handy" though if you know what I mean? The Hardy does a good job of controlling muzzle flip and recoil, although coming to it from a T8 the sound supression is nowhere near as good. You can't have it all though right? With the short 20" barrel on the A7 .270 it definately needs a mod though that's for sure!

Yeah i'm thinking personal preference will dictate something with a bit of weight like at T8 on the end of it will suit better to stabilize the muzzle more. Think if I go with a T8 or something similar in weight it should be grand!

Well, the A7's settling down nicely and comfort behind a full-bore rifle is returning. I'm sure more experienced shots realise better, but the groups I believe are well within the requirements of DSC1 and have given sufficient confidence to feel ready to take on live quarry on my first stalk in a few weeks time and out and about with my mentor.

I've never shot off sticks before, but a big callout for those supplied by Remmy (http://www.thestalkingdirectory.co.uk/showthread.php/62349-Sticks-Deer-stalking-sticks). Extremely well made, sturdy, extendable and comfortable:
