Zippo lighter drying out constantly

My Zippo cotton wadding was pulled at Alderney airport as she said it was flammable and dangerous! I repacked it with cotton wool balls but it was never the same again :(

I was given a classic Zippo about 9 months ago.

I’ve never owned any sort of lighter before, and was really impressed with it. It’s a very pleasing object, and works superbly in all conditions.

However! It seems to run out extremely fast.

I top it up, use it 2-3 times, then it sits, often for a month or so. Every single time I go back to it, it’s empty and I have to top it up.

This totally defeats its purpose: it lives in my truck as a back up when I can’t get a ferro rod to work.

Does anyone know why this is happening
? Am I doing something wrong?
I bought the gas replacement cartridge from zippo, I don't smoke but always carry it mostly for others lol but it seems to last for ever if left unused months when bein

dont buy cheapo fuel its crap, get zippos own fuel it burns and lasts longer, get a spare can of fuel and leave it in your truck, keep the wick trimmed, ive used zippo,s for nearly 60 years and they never let me down bs

Spanish airport security are the worst. They tried to take a solid silver zippo from me but I let them bin the internals ( zippo replaced free after explaining)

Last trip I just dismantled the lighter and put it in my hold luggage

I have a can of zippos fuel.

I have now sealed the lighter in a zip lock bag and will see how it goes.

I’ll be honest: for something with such legendary status, it really doesn’t seem fit for purpose if it has to be babied like this!

Here you go ...
You'll lose that slightly petrol flavour though ...

Zippo makes a spare tank, which also allows evaporation but at a much, much slower rate, it'll hold fuel for months. Comes with a spare flint and holder also, at least they used to. There has always been enough fuel left whenever I needed it. My lighter is used frequently, so I don't always do this but a 1.5" section of bicycle tire inner tube fits snugly over the lighter and keeps fuel longer, the Zippo condom, if you will... In my experience, the Zippos work great in wind where a Bic fails. On those really cold days It may need to be coddled a bit to warm up. Fuel CanisterR0275341.webp

Zippos are great if you were a smoker k imagine and using it every few hours but emergency lighters they are not. It’s liquid fuel and will evaporate over time as not air tight
