Any teachers out there managed to get on a DSC1 course?

Yes, yes i know teachers have loads of holidays that they dont deserve, despite the fact that they work ten hour days and then come home to work evenings and weekends for no additional payl But what they can't do is take a day off work when they want. So, i have never been able to find a DSC course that i could attend. Any other teachers out there? How did you manage it?

Not a teacher, but I live in East Kent. I did my DSC1 with Jelen - they did a weekend course which started on a Friday evening near Stockbridge (2 1/2 hr drive away for me)
They had excellent pre course material which really helped.

I did a self study option for DSC1 with Stalking School, Moray. This only requires you to take 1 day off for the assessment. I found this really good in conjunction with the online questions on http://www.dsctraining.org/ (1 month access included with my course).

Yep a teacher here and I got DSC1 done over a weekend with paul at fechan at Byrony college. I would get intouch with paul and see what he is currently running.
Just make sure you do your homework before you go.

I have not found anything like that but i can never take time off -even one day. I had a sports teacher colleague once who was desperate to go to Wimbledon. Took a sickie, and got spotted on the tv. Fired next day, never saw him again. I am even told how close my relatives can be before i am allowed to attend their funeral! !

I run dsc1's all over the place in a sat/sun weekend format like Bart says, come over to our gap180 course near Hitchin and get a couple of outings in at the same time so that way it's a short getaway rather than a weekend course. Pierred on here hosts the course and can advise you of dates.

If you're reasonably intelligent you would pass your DSC1 by swatting up the course material beforehand and just turning up for the assessment. But you would miss out on a lot of extra info, and the chance to meet a whole group of like-minded folk.
Depends what you want to gain by it.

I am a teacher, currently not doing work I should be doing, despite having a week off to do it. As such I have the opportunity to respond too. I did my DSC1 through the site, but run by BASC, it was the only one I could attend as they ran it over two weekends it was held at Eridge Park on the Kent border. It took me ages to find one that worked for me. Good luck

The BDS do a UDD package (Ultimate deer Data CD) which allows you to do all the learning at home and just turn up at the weekend for the assessment only. Should be easy for a clever teacher type person and only costs £185 all-in.

I did self study and took the exam only. Was there for basically a morning. Worked well if you are academic and capable of teaching yourself the information.

Group of like-minded folk is a very nice way of putting it Tim! However I do think that the chat gives a lot that it would be sad to miss. Lot of useful stuff out there that I learned that wasn't strictly on the syllabus.

I agree David - all the "extras" were worth more to me than the certificate itself I reckon!
But having sat the written test I now know I could've passed that bit ok just with the learning I did at home. Not that I would've wanted to do it that way, but it's reasonable to suppose that someone else might choose that route due to other commitments clashing with course times.
