Now then folks..

Am I right in thinking that a 6.5x55 cal barrel will go on my R8 without needing a new bolt face?
Is it just the magazine insert that'll need changing?

Current calibers are 22-250 and 308..

Regards..

Correct your bolt head will be fine

but

I think you might need a new mag insert as 22-250 is just for that cal and .308 & .243 are for them
and 6.5x55 will need a different insert but I could be really wrong so don't take it as gospel

Mr Fox, I'm sure you are bang on with that. The 22-250 and 308 are different mag inserts, same bolt face.
I'm sure when I bought my 308 barrel it came with the insert supplied.
I've a slot free on my ticket for 243 spare barrel. I was going to sell my Sako 85 in 243 and get the Blaser barrel but,
now I'm going to keep the Sako and put in for a variation for a 6.5x55 barrel.
I've no experience with this caliber other than a shooting mate has a Tikka in it, though he uses it for target shooting.
Whats the Feelings of this cal for stalking? Does it do as much damage as the 243, which I have found to be pretty excessive on Roe..
Just fancy a change..

CJS,

Yes...you'll need as different mag insert...funnily enough the 6.5 x 55 insert also doubles up for a .25-06

Stalking wise it is one of the "classics". Can handle everything bullet wise from 100-150 grain but with 123, 129, 130, 139,140 grain bullets you will deal with everything deerwise in the UK.

I use a 140 grain and it performs perfectly on roe, fallow, sika and red.

Lots of advocates and fans of the old "Swede" on here!

Cheers Dorsettaff..

Funny you should mention the 25-06, that would of been my first choice.
Blaser, in their wisdom , decided not to make one for the R8. R93 only. For some reason.
Anyway, thanks for the reply…

Ive got a feeling you can't get one NEW for the r93 now either..? As I was after one, and it wasn't on their calibre list. Then I went in for the 6.5 x 55.

6.5x55 is a great caliber I use it on muntjac, roe, fallow and fox keep in mind it's a bigger and slower bullet so you will get less damage than with a 243

i use 140gr RWS DK's in my M03 for everything above its my go to rifle I love it and wouldn't change it

if you order a new barrel go for something longer than 20" 22"would be a lot better for the caliber

And how do you like your 6.5?

cjs

I would say I'm still in the experimental stage at the moment. I'm just working through different factory ammo and trying different things. I've got some reloading dies for it, but haven't set them up yet. I would say its extremely accurate, particularly with the norma 120 bts (in mine). Most deer I've shot have gone down with ease, except a few notable runners With the RWS 140gr (harder bullet punching through perhaps?). And when i say runners, just run on a bit, not lost. From what I've researched it's best for reloading, and choosing a bullet with the right balance of expansion and penetration.? Which is the next stage of my research!

I got the calibre after hearing or being told so many times of how nice it was, and how nice it is to shoot. And yes it is just that. But I would say the recoil is not too far from the .308, (in my rifle) it's just different. I would say if I wanted to keep things simple, I wouldn't have the 2 barrels. The .308 will do what the 6.5 will and more. But for someone wanting a single rifle for all UK conditions the 6.5 would be more than adequate.

Just to add to this. I also have a 243 barrel for my blaser which I set up for foxing, and I'd say that the "perceived" recoil is actually more in the .243 than my 6.5. It's a slightly shorter barrel (20 inch) and I'm probably feeling more the velocity/muzzle flip than the 'type' of recoil I get with the 6.5.

Thanks Boarboy & Markfox, nice bit of info there.
Just out of interest, what scope do you have on your 6.5s?

Regards.

Mark, do you find any negatives with the smaller objective? I know you've got top notch glass there but, have you compared it to a 56 in low light?

cjs

Ive got 2 x 44mm and a 56mm z6i

on on paper yes it does make a small difference with the bigger objective , but in reality theres no difference I'm a sporting shooter I'll stop shooting way befour my scope will give in I'm quite happy to pass on a deer till another day at last light as im not shooting for cull figures

I personally find the illumination far more beneficial

any Swarovski scope you buy will be the best you can buy out there for stalking

Going back to the original question, what would be the answer if it was .300 win mag rather than 6.5 X 55, please?
