Bullet HEADS !!!!! are BULLETS !!!

I remain puzzled that so many shooting folk seem unaware that the thing that comes out of a rifle barrel when it is fired is exactly the same thing that

was previously atop the brass case before firing & is called, simply, the "bullet".

It forms a component of the loaded "cartridge" ( or complete "round") together with the case, powder & primer. Does anyone call any of these latter parts

the 'bullet tails', 'bullet feet' or whatever?

When zeroing, does anyone ask or check where their 'bullet head holes' appear on the target?

Grumpy rantlet over.

[I must get out (stalking) more].

Wrong, wrong, wrong you bloodthirsty Neanderthal

-Bullets
- action statements
- detail significant activities
- used to promote

Just to be annoying, why then do you get boat tail bullets? If there are tails why can't there be heads. Lol.

I'm one of the grumpy ones. As the Queen of hearts says (I paraphrase) off with the heads of people who call bullets "heads" it will teach themm a lesson!

David.

I know what you're all saying but it does seem strange to me when somethings head is at the opposite end to its neck and shoulders :)

......it's useful though for a bit of sport and discourse with the idiot "yoofs" in some gunshops ...............

Whereas I concur with the annoying use of head for bullet, I am even more confused as to when a bullet becomes a "Projectile"
I recently enquired about .50 cal bullets (For reloading) to be told that ammunition was unavailable.
My response was that i did not require "Rounds" but bullets for reloading.
The response was "Oh you mean projectiles!"
Oh well better than "Heads"!

Fella trying a couple of very expensive Pcp rifles at Sealand a couple of years back, "EER, I'll have the one with the wooden handle", at least he could appreciate a timber stock:D

Harks me back to a chav asking me "Is that a real bullet gun mate"?, Yeah, shoots bullets cocker!

I know the feeling only too well mate. I was out with the .270 one day after deer when a dog walker came along a footpath on my permission. I spotted him from a fair distance away so unloaded and shouldered the gun. When he got to me he stopped for a quick chat and asked "Is that a real bullet gun"?
I was in a mischievous mood so couldn't resist a little sarcasm. My reply was "Well all the deer that I have shot with it seemed to think it is real cos they all fell over, and it wasn't with laughter"!
He walked away looking a little confused!

Couldn't give a monkeys. Mostly because I'm not a pedant. ;)

me either ! our liberties are threatened from all directions yet the biggest risk to our sport is intolerant pedants within that will surely drive away fresh people from taking up our sport !

Interesting you think of pedantry as being the biggest threat to shooting. It could be argued that discussing and agreeing jargon and terminology between ourselves, actually made us stronger through exclusivity, by team building / bonding which then gives us a stronger voice.

As far as the tautology of "Bullet Head" when "bullet" is a perfectly adequate description goes, it just seems unnecessary to me. But it is ubiquitous, many dealers seem to be using it in their lists.

But I reckon it is more logical to associate the projectile end of the cartridge with a head given it is next to the neck and that is on the shoulder of the case.

The one that I have not got my head around ( :) ) is the use of the terminology "head", "head space" and "head stamp" with reference to the base of the cartridge...that could be improved on I am sure!

Slightly to one side here, yesterdays news contained an article/report of a "Revolver- smoothbore" along with a really nice picture of an auto, looking a bit like a Walther.

ok I was being slightly dramatic ! but the point remains that I see a lot of newbees asking a genuine question of the experienced members on forums only to be chastised by pedantic people , do you think that helps encourage them ?

I wonder if they would feel as agrieved if corrected on the terms in Football, darts, Snooker, fishing or god forbid Golf?

Perhaps we should start renaming bits in cars to suit street jargon as well rather than try to have new comers learn to proper names and terms. After all the names of the parts of a cartridge are hardly difficult to learn and remember and it is not as if they were dreamt up yesterday now is it?

Was just thinking on this and remembered seeing someone once commenting that the cartridge case in the one place where the mouth is found at the opposite end to the head but have just thought that this is untrue as a River has it's mouth to other end to it's head waters so the head is the other end to it's mouth. Maybe we should also rename the parts of the river then to appease those who do not seem to be able to grasp the concept of the names?

I know you were, but there is an interesting trade off between being one of a gang sharing the same argot and feeling excluded from it for the same reason.

Jargon/terminology could be seen as either inclusive or exclusive if you see what I mean.

As a newbie I sort of expect to be corrected and informed....in order to get the knowledge to become less of a newbie....Chastisement is unnecessary I agree.
