Canada geese

As the adults are in moult and cannot fly at this moment in time and obviously the goslings can't then it was a case of almost literally shooting sitting ducks.

personally speaking this is one of the most depressing threads I have read on a shooting forum.

i have land to protect and as per the law I have done nothing wrong sir,

Geese: control populations of problem birds under licence - Detailed guidance - GOV.UK

i am of course carrying out my duties on the estate where I work, and in doing so saving some of the land needed by our own uk species to continue to thrive, I don't take joy in doing so but it's a requirement to preserve our own uk species on a SSSI Lake and surrounding land.

with respect

bob.

Because of posts like this I would have used common sense on what calibre to use, based on my shooting experience, and got on with the job without posting it for all to see.
I know it isn't anything unlawful or shameful, just a sad job that needs to be done which doesn't sit very well with everybody.

the same could be said about stalking, fishing, foxing but to mention a few, it's real life some folk need to get used to it,

and I am not the only one to post their exploits on this forum.....have a look around ed. deer boar etc.

Boar and Deer aren't exactly 'sitting ducks' and not quite so romanticly looked at as Geese.
You knew what calibre could do the job and the law reference culling the Geese so why not just get on with it - doing a good job quietly and efficiently.
Picking off 'sitting ducks' with a rifle isn't in the same league as Goose shooting on the forershore with a shotgun.

I know just what you mean. It almost brings me to tears to think of all those baby rabbits and foxes that are orphaned too. And don't even get me started on those poor wee woodpigeon squabs that get left alone too. And those poor wee magpie and crow chicks. . . . .And oh god, that's got me thinking of all the baby trouts that are left to fend for themselves too . . . . .ffs

(The above post may contain traces of impatient sarcasm)

what sarcasm ?

you forgot all those bambi's in all the pictures on this forum and many other forums as well as those piglets we all love to eat, or is it just me that likes bacon and venison?

bob.

Why close it? I suspect if more people who made a stupid statement were publicly mocked it may go a long way to making them think twice the next time ;)

dont forget to mention the roe kids we orphan when shooting Roe does for crop damage in June...oh we don't do that (yet) ? If it was made legal (after all many people regard deer as vermin) then some surely would do it, after all it's now legal, so it's perfectly okay, so nothing shameful.................

Nah, don't think so.

those of us with ethics should always speak out, even if in a minority of one...which I don't think I am

I am obviously very much n the Canada geese are not vermin camp........but if the job need to be done ....why post it on here or anywhere for that matter? I would think the members on here collectively shoot, dig, trap, dispatch etc etc many hundreds of young fox Cubs. But all bar a few choose to post their "achievements" on here. It is a distasteful job to be done for most doing it, and I would regard the shooting of goslings exactly the same way ( although I think it is not a job that needs to be done to start with), no need to broadcast it and certainly not boast about it, and Bobjs posts were verging on that.

A sentiment to be applauded. That being the case, might I respectfully ask whether you also focus your efforts on protesting against intensive rearing of poultry, EU pork housing standards, battery hens, the slaughter of day-old dairy bull calves, the EU Fisheries policy regarding discards and the landing of undersized fish, the practice of Halal slaughter in the UK, etc? We uncaring plebians await the reform with bated breath . . . . .

Don't worry bud,

I was not boasting about anything, I had to check if it was the right thing to do and found it was as quick to ask on here than get a reply from a certain place, having got the reply and even some comments on the ethics of it made me feel a tad better when going about it, Its not something I have ever done before (unlike some keyboard experts on this forum) so no harm in checking others feelings and findings with respect to the job in hand.

it was carried out clinically with precision and care not to damage or scare the other birds/wildlife as well as the pink feet on the same lakes.

next time I will not comment on anything that I think is wrong, and maybe just maybe I will become a keyboard hero and join in digging at others.

Pants.

No, don't do that! We have enough keyboard heroes as it is. Anyway, the heat will soon be off you as I'm awaiting a further response from Explosives Licensing regarding my reactive targets. Wait and see the flak (sorry, lol) I get for THAT

I have been using some when teaching and practicing long range shooting with a young fellow up here, I wish you well with it,

I think they set me back about £10 for 10 so not a bad bang for your Money.

Ah, but I have a piece of magickery information that may allow me to manufacture them for a lot less. Trouble is, I need to clarify the legal position before I go about mixing binary explosives with gay abandon :-D

spotting scope to check the birds as we have some pink feet there too.

bob.[/QUOTE]

That's a bit like saying you needed a Spotting scope to tell the difference between Muntjac and Fallow.
I take it the Pinkfeet Geese you mention are from a collection as Pinkfeet Geese are a migrating Goose which are safely breeding in Iceland at the moment.
Now if you had had Greylag Geese someone with not much experience might struggle to tell the difference between Pinkfeet and Greylag BUT not being able to identify with the eye a Canada from a Pinkfoot !!!!!!!
Also how it's only the Canada's that are/was causing a problem !!!!!! Don't the other Geese eat/feed.
As others have stated fine seek advice But then post on a Forum of let's be honest is a distasteful task/job you have done is NOT really good PR for shooting.
If someone had gone into a Deer Park/Farm and shot x number of Deer with new born young at foot what do think the reaction would be !!!!!!!

job you have done is NOT really good PR for shooting.

What are you afraid of? And why must some people always seem to be pandering to the bloody antis? This is a lawful and necessary activity under discussion, the OP is seeking advice and suggestions as to how best to conduct it, and what seems like half the folk responding are scuttling about trying to appease the entire planet by taking an apologist attitude to a perfectly lawful activity. This is a shooting forum. This section is 'Other Shooting and Keepering'. It's hardly likely that anyone ending up here is going to be looking for knitting tips, cupcake recipes or links to where they can get themselves a non-scratchy balaclava, so can we quit this apologist bulls hit and get off each others backs?

Ain't afraid of nothing. But the OP seems to struggle to identify Geese at 150yrd without a spotting scope so was he actually shooting Canada Geese or Greylag !!!!!!!
And it has been pointed out many times before ANYBODY and ANYONE can read see these posts .
Also I'm fully aware of what's Legal and NOT so certainly don't need people with Attitude like yourself ranting and pointing it out Thank you
