I require an SUV to use for work, which will involve in the region of 10,000 miles a year, and stalking. I drive a Mazda truck at the moment but am looking for something comfortable and more economical on the road and also has good off-road ability. I've been looking on the internet and made a few call but would like to ask if anyone can offer their experiences.

I think you will get 20 different answers from 20 different people! Personally, I have a VW Touareg which I love and think is the mutts, not the most economical thing but supremely comfy and incredibly capable off road. What kind of budget are you looking at?

I got an old RR Sport and put some proper tyres on it. Drive distance in comfort and proper off road ability when it get's the other end. Boot liner means I don't make too much of a mess of it. Great bit of kit, much nicer to drive than the old Navara. No bills yet either......................

I think really to get any sensible response you might need to indicate a budget.

Incidentally the best vehicle in the world is my three Landcruisers ...

I now have a dacia duster great car 4x4 dog shooting kit no problem. I work on a farm part time and have no problem going anywhere in it with the snow and mud standard tyres. Please don't be fooled by the look of them I had a ford ranger pick up with bfg ats before this and a deffender 90 before that and I will take my dacia over both cheap to run nice to drive. All the best Adrian

and my two landcruisers, 450,000 trouble free miles between them !

Pikey coursers seem to favour The Honda CRV and do well on and off road. Seen some pretty smart although dangerous escapes in them and they have a great turn of speed on and off road.

A Discovery 4 could well be the answer. On the road, 245 or 254 HP (depending on year) from it's 3 litre twin turbo diesel will see you motoring along any road with aplomb, it's cavernous inside, even if you don't get the commercial and it'll out-do any pickup off road. As for cheap running costs, the fuel isn't too bad depending on your driving habits but you need to budget for servicing. However - although mine has been excellent (touch wood) there is the worry of Land Rover's reliability record. To be detached about it, it's abysmal although since 2010ish, it is very much improved. But they are complicated things, so for excellent off road ability and a marvellous on road driving experience, with approaching Range Rover comfort, could you?

The Land Cruiser is a good alternative as is the Nissan Pathfinder. But they all have their drawbacks. Depending on your over all requirements, would one of the "soft roader's" fit the bill? Worth considering if your off road forays aren't too taxing. You would certainly save on running costs. A Nissan X-trail is an excellent car.

Landcruiser ...does every thing it says on the tin . I was trying to buy another one a couple of weeks ago , landcruiser Amazon 4.2 , 1996 . 1 owner , full history with just 63,000 miles , (nearly run in by Amazon standard )£17000 couldn't buy it !!!

I've been impressed with my Outlander GX5 Auto. Mitsubishi has recently changed the specifications and I think the equivalent vehicle is now the GX4.

It's like a cathedral inside, I can get low 40s at motorway speeds or high 50s if I nurse it and I suspect it would scare me with its capabilities if I really got serious with it off road.

I'll be looking for a replacement in the New Year the only reason I won't have another is if the Skoda Kodiaq impresses me more.

Kind regards,

Tim

I've got an 11 reg 3.0 Toyota hilux D/C invinsible with lesther , cruise etc etc it's a fantastic 4x4 does 30-35mpg , cheap car tax rather than £400+ and really comfortable

I commute an hour each way everyday in my Freelander 2 and keep up with the Defenders in the deep mud and ruts on our stalking and pheasant syndicate on the weekend. I get 38mpg with town and country road driving using AT tyres.

Nissan Navara D40 i get 42 mpg and does about 300 miles each week. the engine has now done 236000 miles with no hassle (apart from clutches)
And its very smooth and when needed rips the arse off most motors.
lots to choose from. Good luck

Wish I knew how to get 38mpg from a Freelander 2. I've run a 12plate SD4 HSE for 3 years now. I do not exceed the speed limits any more (!!). I get about 31-32mpg driving from Leicester to Scotland and 23-28 running about. I've had it 'chipped' for economy - FA difference.
I'm looking to replace it - but 40k+ for a Disco Sport hurts. The Yeti is No1 in the running to date. Very few give ground clearance details.
Disco and RR Sport are too big for me (and the dog).
Watching the thread with interest.

I am in a simila situation except I run about 15K on road a year

The vast majority of the previous answers were sub 30mpg cars

If you can afford to run sub 30mpg thats fine

I had a Shogun (25mpg and a Diesel Jeep (28mpg) both of which were epic off road and fantastic on road but when derv hit 125 per ltr, they had to go

Freelanders are so unreliable they have never figured on my radar

CRV is a possabuility but not sure if you can lock it into four wheel drive?

I now run a Rav 4 which I can lock into 4 wheel drive and which has proved good enough in mud and snow

No its never going to match a Shogun for pure off road grunt, but then it gives me 45mpg+ and hasent got me stuck yet dispite being up to the axels a couple of times and I can fit a large deer sled in it lengthways.

PS I dont drive like grandad more like a demented Hamelton and i still get 45mpg. Also its surprisingly good at towing which I didnt expect beause its so much lighter than the other excelent tow car the Shogun. All the Jeepsa were arse wagging crap tow cars.

After 20 years of Jeeps (cherokee and grand cherokee) and Shoguns, i baught it with a heavy heart and low expectations but I have to say its much better than I expected.

I run a 13 plate Subaru Forester which gets me every where I need to go
Good economy & comfortable.

I also have a Ford Ranger for the times when I need that bit extra carrying or towing capacity
