I have one of these that came on a rifle variable x 32 (cant remember the mag). What have I got?

looks like a good old school bomb proof American scope. It's on my 7mm rem mag which I had intended to put something slightly higher power on.

thanks in advance

scopechief is an old bushnell model... IV came out back in the 70's... Japanese made if I remember my reading right.

Not sure what they're worth but they were budget to start with, and that's as much as I can remember without a woogle of it

Scopechief was a higher end Bushnell in the 1970s, and they are good. Came in 1.5-4.5x32mm and 2.5-8x32mm ( like the venerable Leupold 2.5-8x36 ).
In the 1990s, they brought out a new Scopechief, just in 3-9x40mm matte duplex, but soon dropped it for the Trophy XLT and HD. I have one, and like it a lot.

2.5-8x or 2.5-10x is a good range for a hunting scope. But if you want an inexpensive scope that will take advantage of an accurate 7mm Rem Mag, I recommend the Vortex Diamondback 4-12X40mm with BDC reticle, or the Burris E1 4.5-14x42 AO. Both are pretty light and slim.

thanks Southern - insightful as ever. Once I find out if the 7mm RM is accurate, one of those recommended scopes might end up on it and the Bushnell saved for a veteran shooter of another day.

The 7mm is another Husky by the way.

The first scope that I put on a centrefire rifle was a Bushnell Scopechief 6x40. As you say they were a budget scope made in Japan but actually not too bad for the money, it certainly impressed a RFD friend of mine when we compared my cheap scope with his European scope at dusk one evening.

There was also an illuminated reticule model produced by the company long before I can recall seeing an IR scope produced by anyone else offered for sale in this country.

To be blunt things have moved on and I wouldn't want to have such a scope fitted on a centrefire rifle these days but I might put one on a rimfire.
