The Stalking Exchange

I have had an idea and this is one for SikaMalc to reflect on And apologies if its been postulated before

I have seen a few informal swap threads over the last couple of years and recommendations etc one to another but I wonder if SD could formalise this a bit and at the same time boost the supporter income for the bursaries. How about a forum where stalking offers are made into a central pot that admin keeps updated. The donor puts a realistic £equivalent price on it (or admin could create a guide table e.g. Roe buck bronze medal over 3 days stalking plus B&B, dinner etc £1000, 2 days hind stalking Scotland sort own accommodation £300 etc etc). Donors build up notional credits as their slots are taken that they can then spend on what they would like to do. The key is everyone in the pot has to be offering something in exchange to get into the pot in the first place - no real money changes hands. its just I'll give you this in exchange for that. It could get really interesting as it gets international I really fancy goat blatting for a couple of weeks with Dodgy Knees in NZ in his cabin!

Mindful this might take some of the "trade away" the deal is the "buyer" pays SD 5-10 pc of the value of his stalking to SD to boost the bursary £ So £100 for a medal Roe buck for the guy who say has only Sika in big blocks in Sutherland could be a real bargain and a nice change Plus of course we get to meet fellow SDers

Thoughts?

I will hazard a guess that admin have enough to do just keeping on top of the site and running their own jobs and for it to go ahead someone else would need to organise and run it.
Like many ideas it sounds great, provided someone else does all the work.
But im sure admin will wander past after reading the last 200 posts. Kicking a few people who are doing stuff they shouldn't be doing and then answer emails to customers etc etc and voice their opinion.

Sounds like a nice idea, but still brings the whole "good will" swap down to a financial exchange. All this idea of a gold medal is worth X and a red hind is worth Y just means that unless you have something of similar "percieved" value to exchange you would not be able to swap your meager muntjac doe for something else.

I understand your sentiment in trying to raise money for the bursary scheme. However as a well respected miserable git I think that while it is great that this community help some less fortunate people with the cost of DSC1, I don't believe that there are many on here who could not stump up the money to expand their knowledge or credentials if only they did without something else in exchange. Its not likely to be the case that their livelihood relies on it.

What may be more simple is to have a formal "swap" section which like the classified section requires you to have a particular identity. E.g in the case of classified ads you must have 30 posts. In order to be in the "swap" section you may have to be a supporter. This would require no input from the admin guys to burden them further.

Nice idea, but....... according to John in the last Supporters Prizewinners Draw, of the entire membership of this Forum only 218 of us are actually Supporters. That does not seem to me a sufficient base to operate this type of scheme.
I choose to be a Supporter as a means of returning something for the support and assistance so freely offered to me by members on here and as a little recompense to Admin and Owners for the service they provide. I am fairly confident that the majority of Supporters are of a similar mind. It would take a very significant increase in Supporter numbers for a scheme such as you suggest to stand a chance of working in a sustainable way.
(but then my chances of winning a prize in the Draw will drop through the floor:D )

Start small to get big, if people realise what's on offer they may wish to partake hence bumping numbers up, that's if I've read your comment correctly that is

I would truly love to believe in the altruism that you describe. Unfortunately, in my experience the system would be open to abuse.
How many times have you read posts on here about established members being subjected to the troll-like behaviour of some (very few) members from time to time?
I think that this would be a brilliant scheme if it was able to operate as intended but it would need some very careful and time-consuming control to ensure this. Perhaps starting with how to qualify for the exchange scheme? Possibly a Trusted Member Status? How would that be judged and by whom?

Anyway, this is all academic as far as I am concerned as I would not be able to participate. I'll shut up now.

Nice idea, but as someone else has pointed out applying a monetary value defeats the object rather.
It might work on a similar basis as a time bank, which is a local initiative whereby people offer their skills etc on the basis that everyone's time is of equal value.
So, for the stalking exchange, you would have to work on the basis that every outing is of equal value. If you were to take someone out stalking, FOC, under this arrangement, that would give you one stalk in the bank. You could then "spend" this credit by taking up an offer of an outing from someone else who's offering outings via the bank.

I'm happy to cook you a FOC Level 2 rated in-the-woods breakfast in return for any no-charge (non trophy animal) stalk anywhere in Kent, Sussex or Surrey:

Cook-In-The-Woods.webp

How's that for a bargain!

there have been a couple of good websites doing swap stalks all over the world, for like minded hunters and works well, atb wayne

ah, we nearly had a deal. But kidneys? Barf!!. I hate offal.

That's what comes of being born rich or being pandered to as a kid. Eat what's in front of you or starve was the rule in my day.
I was always hungry and would gnaw the arse off a skunk if given the chance. I would eat chitterlings, hodge, liver, heart and even pig's feet, all with bread and butter.
Too much money and too well fed nowadays.

To be clear it was "sans fresh doe kidney" only if I failed to shoot one of the Singing Stalker's deer. Couldn't know he hates the wee lumpy things!

Sum it up nicely.

It sounds a good idea on paper but it depends on the good will and co-operation of a good few members, not just those that have read this thread. Then there is the time and effort, of the already stretched owners of the site, to try and make it happen it is I am afraid doomed and will be consigned to the "good idea but perished at birth" box.
