Who uses a fixed scope

Hi folks,

There was quite an interesting thread about the use of fixed scopes rather than variables (Fixed power scope)

That got me thinking:

  1. who uses a fix scope
  2. what scope is it (make, mag, objective and ret)
  3. what do they use it for

Discussions on merits and whys / wherefores encouraged

Swarovski Nova 8x56 and a 4A reticle, had it since 1992, tried a Nightforce nxs or something but it was crap!! For practical foxing and stalking it's great.

ATB,

Have done in the past

Swarovski 8X56 Habicht

I used it for woodland, high seat, walk and stalk fox & deer as it was all I owned on my single 243 rifle

+ Side its cheep and i am told that the 8X56 gave the best low light capability. Variables are not as good due to the lens design necessary to make them variable. Fixed mags are also light weight

- Side. Much too powerful for close woodland stalking, not powerful enough for confident long range shots apart from in the general direction of the front end of the animal type shots. Which lets face, it is all some people want / need especially if using a suitable cannon. I was using a 243 and wanted to be more precise

I am not a bad shot. A few years shooting in competition out to 600yards taught me a thing or two and the simple fact is, at 200m with a 8X56 I am pretty rubbish at 200m with a 2.5/15/56 I can put in a decent group

That said how many shoot deer at 200m? At 100m I can group with an 8X56 but I can group a dammed site better with a 2.5/15/56. Heart shot 8X56? yes all day at 100. Head shot, not so much

I know for a fact I have put deer on the ground with shot i wouldn't have attempted with an 8X56

I am sure there are gurus out there who can shot the eyeball out of a fly at 100m with an 8X56 but that's not the point. At my above average level I know i can shoot better with the more powerful scope.

But theres a limit to the power advantage.

I got a 5X30 and it was so powerful it was off putting seeing the cross hairs jiggle about

I had to have good conditions and my A game on to see any advantage with it, so I sold it.

I use a fixed power on a few of my rifles.

Springfield 1903a4 in 30-06. Weaver K4 with a post reticle. I chose this scope because this was the most affordable scope I was willing to buy and keep the historic A4 somewhat historically correct. The lyman alaskan scope that was used in WWII costs way too much to put on a rifle I rarely use. This setup actually introduced me to the usefulness of fixed power scopes. I have used this rifle on 1 deer and 6 squirrel (1125fps cast bullet load) and a whole bunch of range shooting. In the woods the K4 is an excellent scope. Given the rarity and collector value of this rifle, it doesn't goto the woods anymore.

2nd rifle is a Savage MKII bull barrel 22 long rifle. It has a Weaver K2.5 with a post reticle. This is a great small game rifle. And even more, it's a training rifle for my Son. He started using it when he was 11. Wait, no he started using it when he was 13. He spent 11 and 12 with open sights on a different rifle and then at 13 he moved to this rifle with the Weaver K2.5. The reason he's using this setup is because of the 3rd rifle.

3rd rifle is a Savage 340 in 30wcf (my favorite cartridge). This also has a weaver K4 with a post reticle. My son uses the 22lr for majority of the practice and when he switches to the 30wcf, the sight picture, eye relief, and all that stuff is very familiar to him. My son (and me to some degree) likes to fidget. I figured a fixed power scope would remove any compulsion to try and fidget with the scope before the shot.

4th rifle (will be something I get in the next couple of years) will be a 6.5x55 or a 308win for long range fun shooting. This one will either wear a fixed 8 or a fixed 10 power scope with a MOA dot reticle. Plan is to learn the reticle and not have to worry about the sub-tensions changing since the maginicaftion cannot change. Also, I'm too stingy to spring for a FFP scope.

I currently have fitted:
One S&B 6x42 no.4 reticle on a .270 for hill-stalking and sporting rifle on the range. and on two .177 airguns, for vermin.
S&B 4x36 no. 8 reticle on a .308 for running-target and sporting rifle on the range.

S&B 8x56 on my 308 for deer. Docter 8x56 on my 223 for fox. S&B 6x42 on my Hornet for fox and rabbits. S&B 6x42 on my 22LR for rabbits.

No.7 reticles on all.

As someone above said, no faffing about. Aim and shoot.

Thers no faffing about with a variable

Set it for the needs of the day, aim and shoot

Woodland i have it on about 5? Id have it less but you can see the mod and that's off putting

High seat generally about 8 or 10

open hill or big field, max 15

I can count on one hand the amount of times I have altered the mag to take a shot

S&B 6x42 A4 reticule on my Sako 75 in 6.5x55 for fallow/muntjac in woodland - working okay at the moment - simple and robust, and nice quick target acquisition

S/B 2.5-10x56 zenith FD7 308 deer
“ “ 8x56. Classic. 270 hill deer
“ “ 8x56 Ill dot classic 6.5x55 deer
doctor 8x56 Ill dot 22/250 fox
Love the zenith best superb scope

You've seen it before but as Photobucket clearly took a dislike to the stock colour here again sporting a 6X40 Habict:

As per an earlier post I do struggle when using the above in even a 100 yard competition compared to what I can see, and sometimes hit, with a Swaro cranked to 24-power. That however may be down to a 59-year old pair of eyes. We shall see tomorrow!

I have used 8x56's in the past S+B and Ziess for everything from shooting rats to deer stalking and everything in between and altho I havent got a fixed now I would always choose a fixed from the big 3 over any varabile made by any other make

Fixed 10 Bushnell and fixed 12 Leupold.
Neither in use at moment.
Using 2-8 Variable just now, but whatever i’m using i like to practise on small paper plates off sticks (Quad now), or eggs at 200 yards. 8x is just enough for my eyes for eggs at 200.
Ken.

I use a fixed power scope on my 30-06.
Swarovski 6X42 Habitch.
I use it for all stalking hunting. Walking in woodland, open hill stags and hinds in Scotland. All plains game in Africa out to 250 yards, moose ect, ect.
Tusker

Leupold M8 6x42 with fine duplex reticle on Tikka T3 .270 - Used for Roe, Red & Sika out to 150m so far.

Must admit that I haven't used it for the last year due to having a smaller rifle with a variable scope...

I have a rhino 2.5x32 duplex on a .22 great for vermin to 70 yards and a sightron big sky 11 6x42 duplex on my 6.5x55 point and shoot to 250 yards.
I find fixed scopes much easier to shoot with you haven't got to remember to set it to a certain power and you soon get an idea of what things look like at different ranges compared to your reticle.
