17 remington

Hello , im after a 17 remington , I know there are a few on Guntrader , 2 of which are tikka 590s , is this a good action if I was to get it rebarreled, I’m fairly knew to this area ? I don’t really want to have to rebarrel, preferably it would have a reasonable amount of barrel life left , if I was to go down the rebarrelling route , what would it cost roughly and how long would I have to wait ? Or does anyone have anything for sale or that they are thinking of selling ? Any help would be much appreciated , Thanks

17 Rem is a great little calibre that spans small game through to fox. The Tikka actions are good. In fact my 17 Rem is a 595 action and it shoots incredibly well. The bullets are susceptible to wind drift but it is flat shooting with virtually no recoil at all.

I’ve heard many good things about it , my friend was the one who persuaded me to put in a variation for one , he said it’s a magic little round, I was hoping to get rid of the hmr and replace it with a 17 rem just because it could do everything the hmr could do but a lot better , i didn’t want to rush into buying the first one that came along , I wanted to get one that still had some life in it, is there much difference betweeen the 590 and the 595 ? Thanks

No not much difference as far as I am aware. The ejection port is larger on the 595. I suspect if you reload that thecosts will be no different to HMR. One thing I have found with the 17 Rem is that it will peak pressures more suddenly than other cartridges I have worked with so work up loads more slowly than usual.

As far as the difference between the 590 and 595 goes srvet is correct, i have a 590 in 222 and my mate has a 595 in the same calibre,to me they are a no brainer, the action is solid, trigger not half bad, general build quality is a little better than the T3 ( which i have) but the spare mags aren't cheap, expect to pay £80-£90 for genuine replacement but they are mostly metal with a plastic bottom piece, added bonus is the dovetail runs the length of the action so you have more wiggle room in terms of eye relief when mounting night vision.
i have a pulsar N355 on mine.
if you fancy a drive down to kent to have a look at one before you buy PM me.

If I were to choose an action for a semi custom my priority would be to top load, specially in something like a Varmint rifle. Just imagine having an afternoon on the rabbits lying prone, it's so much easier to top load that to keep having to drop the mag.
The calibre it's self is such a nice round to shoot you will love it I'm sure. As stated the smallest variation in increased powder charge can and will put it way over pressure, and be careful developing loads in cool weather, an increase in temperature can be nasty if your close to max.

Be aware there's 17 Rem. and 17 Rem. Fireball that's approximately 10mm shorter (plus some other differences).

You can get similar velocities to the 17 Remington from an Ackley Hornet, but their a pain in the rear to get dies for.
Whatever you choose make sure you can get all the components.

Okay so either of the Tikkas mentioned are fairly bombproof and no real difference between the 2 , the 17 Rem is definitely what I want I’ve read up a fair bit on them , have sourced everything , just not any brass yet , triggermortis I may well take you up on that offer , many thanks chaps

ive shot more foxes with my sako vixen 17 rem over the past 26 years, its awsome, with a used one look out for barrel wear, its easy to load for, stay with 25 gr bullets, but if your using 25g vmax, make sure its a 1-9 twist , vhit 135 is my choice of powder, factory rounds nigh on impossible to find, so its gonna be reloading, good luck matey you wont be dissapointed. dave.

I just love the 17rem my current rifle a lvsf Remington 700 had fired more than 4000 rds and still shot reasonably well when I had the rifle sent to Steve Kershaw last year (receiving it back in Sept) who supplied and fitted an LW50 lightweight varmint barrel which has transformed it into a real tack driver, I sighted the new barrel and the first three shots when zeroed bang around 0.5" I have not touched it since and have only fired maybe thirty rounds since then but the last 12 rounds have accounted for 11 fox's missed one at 70yds clean now just how the hell did I do that...lol..longest fox was a genuine 300 yds longest I have ever taken at that distance the 17 rem is IMHO the best fox rifle of all but then I'm biased a little heres some pics of the rifle when I received it after Steve worked his magic.

I can't wait to get one, thanks for all your help , will update you once I've got somewhere, I've got everything to get going , I just need a rifle now , if anyone has got a genuine rifle with some barrel life left let me know , have got funds waiting , thanks again

I've got a Sako 75 in 17 Rem as my fox rifle. Great cartridge. I rebarrelled mine from 222 sporter barrel to 17 rem varmint. Dumps all its energy in foxes and usually doesnt exit. No recoil and very accurate. Loud without mod. Need to reload as rounds not easily obtained. Can be wise to stockpile components if handloading.

you could get a shot out 222 or 223, and get it rebarreled to 17 rem, easy project and it wouldnt be any more expensive than a new or used one that your not sure about barrell wear.
