Hello and Looking for Advice

Hello all,

I'm based in Glasgow, Scotland and Looking to get back into Stalking and game shooting/beating in general.

As a teen I went stalking a few times with a family friend and I'm trying to get back into it again via this connection. I have family friends on Arran and I'm aware of the BASC Stalking Scheme there. I also have contacts with farms/land in Mauchline, Ayrshire that I reckon I could maybe obtain Roe stalking through.

So I suppose to summarise. Am I best going out and getting as much experience as possible with my family friend and then looking to do the Level 1 Deer Stalking course?

Would be good to hear any advice or if anyone else has been in a similar situation?

Get out with family and friends, DSC1 is not a requirement, but it is well worth doing when you are ready for it

Go out with friends to gain experience & try to remember it's not all about shooting deer.
I understand that it's possible to go on an introductory stalking course, but this will probably be fairly expensive, so depends on how deep your pockets are.

Even with some experience under your belt, you will find DSC1 very informative & enjoyable.
As Ray said, DSC1 isn't a requirement, but the likes of The Forestry Commission & some syndicates stipulate it as a minimum requirement.
Before you do your DSC, get some practice shooting at a target.

I do a lot of Hillwalking and wouldn't mind combing the two pastimes. Would be good to get away from work and stock up the freezer at the same time.

Will be getting in touch with my mum's friend. Was meant to be going over to Dunoon in mid October, but it fell through. Will make a few trips then look further intot he DSC1.

I'd been stalking for three years before I did my L1.
As has been said get out as often as you can and each time is a learning experience no matter whether you have your L1 or not.

Also practice as much as you can for each of the three positions required for the L1
I remember the shooting part of the course. I had finished the range work and packed up my rifle as I thought all the shots were good.
Went up to the distant target where the assessor was studying it intently. He said he thought one of my shots had missed the target altogether which dropped my spirits considerably.
It took another 5-10 min of intense studying by four of the senior group before they all decided two of my shots had gone through virtually the same hole. It was only by really close examination that you could see one of the holes was elongated rather than circular!

Doing a reintroduction as it feels appropriate given the lapse in time since I first posted. A fair bits happened since - marriage, kids, moving house etc.

I've been on doing a fair bit of lurking and reading here. However, managed to get out stalking through a mate about 6 or 7 times over the past few years and recently completed DSC1 through BDS.

Hopefully going for Level 2 later this year. Trying to put myself in the best possible position for a permission/syndicate place should the opportunity present itself.
