Larder in Container Unit Ideas

Hi all,

I've got a "welfare unit" shipping container. I'd like to convert it into a chiller and carcass prep area. I was wondering if anyone else had converted one of these or a shipping container ? Sorry if this has been posted a million times before, just after a few ideas before I approach the council.

Cheers

Fisher make excellent containerised unit for this very purpose

Rarely see them for sale used

A good idea to convert but may be spendy to do

I saw the very same thing in a forest in Yorkshire, it had been done by a professional / company.
Any idea where/who and if they are on here for a nosey?
If it ends up being too much to convert I'll sell it and put the money towards a purpose built one. Hopefully would be less to convert? Already got burned by ordering a small stand alone larder, paid for it, company went bust and didn't see a penny back!

I may be wrong, but I think the F.C. sorted it, Andy would know maybe, (Ronin), He saw it with our visitor group.

What are we talking, ballpark? I already have the container unit and I imagine the Fisher ones are pre made on their site or do they retro fit?

Sorry if I butted in. This is not a Fisher unit. This is a shipping container that has been converted into a chiller. It cost just over £6k in total. I perhaps should point out that it started life as an ambient unit built for the MOD. I bought it, chucked out the AC unit and installed a new chiller unit and railing.
I did look at the Fisher units but could not justify the costs, so waited till something came along that I could convert relatively easily.

No, that's exactly the kind of thing I'm trying to find out about! Was it £6k incl the container? Did you do it yourself by buying in the parts?

this company have supplied larders to FC Scotland Game Hygiene Larder Units
Will have a look at them, cheers.

It was about £2.5k for the container, stainless steel lined and insulated, I bought a new single phase chiller unit and Dave Stretton did the rails. Actually Dave did all the work I just sourced the various bits. I am very pleased with it.

Right ok well that seems pretty doable. I was wanting to split into a chiller and a prep area so wasn't sure if I could just bung in a modular cold room type chiller and line the rest. Were the rails etc and other bits secondhand? Nice looking beasts you've got hung up by the way.

That should be easy enough I would think. I have just put a sink in. It's a 20ft container so a reasonable amount of space. Not sure how many it will take but I have had 7 reds in it down one side of the rails. The only thing I Have found is that some of the stag carcasses are a bit long and touch the floor as it's an 8x8 unit. I would get a 10x10 if I was doing it again. For. Me the stainless interior was too good to miss.

You can get refrigerated wagon bodies that are plastic lined but are just as hygienic as stainless steel. Sometimes they have stand by electrics which just plug in.Try a few wagon breakers as they struggle to get rid of the bodies. You can get them in various sizes up to 40 foot. Might find an abattoir one with meat rails already in!

Their one in our district has cost North of £120,000 so far. #Spendy enough?[/QUOTE] Bloodyhell! Does it come with free stalking ground to fill it with?!

The Fischer larders do look very good. I spoke to them and they were very helpful and sent me some plans. I have got all the figures in my email but I seem to remember a module with a chiller and processing room was about 15K. This would be sufficient for processing and supplying deer under hunter exemption. A unit suitable for an AGHE was considerably more.

Might be worth speaking to these people:

Custom Shipping Container Conversions - S Jones Containers

I liked the look of their website. You might have an issue with height on a standard container but I believe you can get a high cube version.
