257 Weatherby

And may we see it please?

Thanks

K

I had to settle on new old stock Vanguard. Unfortunately having tried to get SGC to quote for a new rifle, they have either not responded, or when they did after the 3rd attempt contacting them, told me they are not focusing on Weatherby so would be a special order and they would need to get a price...still waiting!

I have fitted a Weaver Super Slam 3-15x50 Scope. I rate these highly and find them to be very good value. It is a little heavier than my Leupold and Minox scopes, but it feels sturdier in construction as well.

I will be shooting it this weekend without any tweaks, and will the. See what needs doing...if anything. I suspect freefloat may be worthwhile with bedding, but if shoots close to 1-11/2 MOA, then will be happy enough - for now at least.

Attached a picture of the loaded 257 vs 25-06, and the 300 Weatherby vs 257 and 25-06.

Great set up . I'm not a huge fan of Weatherby cartridges , except the 257 and 375 Weatherby Mags . The 257 is one of my favorite rounds period . A different application , but I've used 120 gr Nosler Partitions for years . It's one of the best open country deer rifle/cartridge combinations I've used . What species are you going to be using it on ? It's more than capable for any UK species , but bullet selection is an important factor , more so than slower rounds in my experience .

Hi,

The rifle will be used for Roe and Red in the UK, but will be taking from SA as well, so will be used for Springbuck, Impala, etc.

Took the rifle out today for the first time. It is a nice setup. Recoil and Noise is not too bad, but definitely a step up from a 25-06. Shooting it alongside the 7mm-08 there was very little difference.

The loads for today were a selection of bullet weights and brands, at intermediate velocities. Best grouping (no surprise) was the Sierra 117gr Gameking. It shot under an inch with a load that was pushing it to 3160fps.

The gun a shoot well enough, now just a case of finding a load for the Barnes that works.

The 100gr partitions grouped around 3”best, and 4.5” worst even though velocity spread on best group was only 20fps with an average of 3450fps. Not an intermediate load and getting up there closer to max. Just goes to show how some guns like certain bullets while others do not.

:cry:I'm a bit disappointed with the accuracy and pace. I was expecting much more pace and the hundred grains should be piling into one spot.

For some reason , mine preferred heavier bullets as well . I usually got my best accuracy out of the 117 and 120 grain bullets . What powder are you using with the 100 gr Partitions ?

Hi.. A 257 Weatherby, I like the idea of the less trodden path. We done, hope you enjoy it.

I loaded the 80gr and 100gr bullets with Ramshot Hunter. The heavier 117 and 120gr bullets have been loaded with Ramshot Magnum.

I will be trying Magnum with 100gr bullets, as well as N160 with the 80gr bullets.

Reloaded 25 gets good reviews for the calibre but there is none available locally at present. I was wanting to try n560 as accordingly to quickload this will yield an extra 150-200fps than most of the other slow burning powders. I have had good results in other overbore cartridges with VIT double base powders, but this was again not available locally.

Thanks for the article.

I also like the unusual calibre options that are out there, ideally without building “wildcats”. I very nearly built a 270-08 “improved” 18 months ago, but settled on a 7mm-08 for that particular rifle. The cost of wildcats in the UK is pretty prohibitive all things considered as well as long delays for dies, etc.

I do like the 6.5x68 and 8x68 cartridges which are “European” Weatherby’s...

That's why I asked , I do have a lot of load data but , unfortunately , I use powders that aren't available in the UK anymore . It does narrow down your options a bit .
Regarding your other post , I had an 8X68 in an older Brno Model 602 . A very powerful , and flat shooting round . Mine was a very accurate rifle , but a bit of a beast . With scope , sling and a full magazine , it weighed over 11 1/2 pounds . I traded it to a hunting buddy ( a Czech by birth and a fanatic for anything Brno lol ) for Ruger No1 in 45/70 , no complaints .

A quick update on the loads. I finally got some time to do some more load testing.

The 80gr TTSX with 70gr hunter produced best velocity of 3830fps and grouped around 1.5”.

The most accurate load has been 100gr Nosler BT with 75.6gr of Magnum at 3570fps and grouped around 0.5”.
