Feeding raw rabbits

just wondering wot sort of portion size is?
is how much to feed say either a cocker or labsized dog?

Also is lead shot a problem/issue?
I know the hawk boys are very careful with only eating stuff shot with steel shot

A birds digestive system is different in that they have a crop containing grit small stones etc that physically grinds what they swallow , therefore lead is a big problem as its not just passed through
As far as portion size goes i used to feed my terriers on whole i found a grazer or a grey squirrel a day was about right for one of them ,a big lab would need a whole adult good condition rabbit i would think

One rabbit per dog per day my sheepdogs got, but obviously depends on the size of the rabbit. So it might have been one big one (hind legs removed for my own use) or two small ones.
Only feed my dogs once a day, 6 days a week. I think that the day of fasting is a good thing when they're fed raw whole carcasses.

Had thought about the issue with hunting /retrieving the rabbits and the dogs deciding it was dinner time and getting tucked in , has anyone encountered this.
Good Afternoon. I have never encountered any issues in this regard. My dogs have always been hunting dogs, everything from snipe to red deer (including rabbit) and would retrieve without any inclination towards 'tucking-in' ! I am not sure how they work this out, I never trained that aspect, they just seemed able to separate hunting, pointing & retrieving from feeding time. I am able to leave game within reach, leave home and it not having been touched on return.
I agree with other 'posts', rabbit is 'the best a dog can get' !
Regards,
'Camodog'.

Copied fae google!

Also as a note ... if a bitch and if spayed feed 25% less straight away ..... I was advised this and weight holds ok .... feed bit more in the season when working them .... otherwise spayed bitch will pile weight on

Adult dogs can be fed between 2-3% of the their body weight. We recommend starting with 1/2 pound of food per 25 lbs of body weight daily and make adjustments according to your dog's age and activity. We also suggest that the daily ration be split to feed morning and night.

Been thinking about this

1st thought was feeding rabbits is actually quite a dear way of feeding ur dog.
At moment getting about 1.50 a rabbit could probably be cheaper buying meat off cuts etc.
Be fine for any smaller or poorly shot rabbits that u couldn't sell anyway.

My next thought was with game season just round the corner, can u do the same with pheasants?? ( Say damaged or unfit for human consumption)
A keeper last year said he occasionally feeds pheasants in the feather to his dogs, same idea as the rabbits. And he's quite a good dog man.
Must admit seemed a bit strange at the time but in theory the same principle as feeding rabbits in fur.
If it's k might be a cheap sources of protein for folk, as always a few damaged birds or even breasted out carcass's

You can feed them any game. Rabbits, pheasant, chicken, goose, duck, deer, boar.. It's all good.

Guaranteed healthy dogs.

I feed raw
You need the bone to meat ratio ... chicken wings are ideal & you can bit minced chicken carcasses

I don’t think I’d feed my dog rabbit or bird in the fur / feather .... just doesn’t feel “ right”
Not knocking it! Just not for me .....

I would like to get my hands on a mincer that was capable of bone etc too .... as said above always game left end of day .... could breast out and carcass and legs through mincer do my own minced carcasses etc

Ok been feeding the GWP pup bunnies for a couple of months and he looks great on it, the only thing I would say is that he has a high tape worm burden as a result. I have been leaving them whole and freezing the rabbits prior to feeding. But this week I found worms in his stool for the first time. A dose of drontal and the next batch of rabbits will be gutted to see if it makes any difference. His stools are much better than on the kibble, firm and full of fur like a fox or owl pellet only larger so I think that a strict worming regime is the order of the day because he does look well on a rabbit a day for dinner.

Freezing will definitely help. I feed mine rabbits also.. They are super healthy because of it. Also, the guts and gut contents is a key part of the 'rabbit diet'

I know of a guy who hunts with hawks and he feeds them all raw birds/rabbits. Says he freezes them for 48 hours and that kills off any parasites etc.

I feed raw

I worm every 6 or 8 weeks

I don’t feed rabbit but hear some who do ....they keep carcass in freezer for fortnight and they say it gives any nasties the die off in that time

Do you realise what that wormer is doing to your dogs?
I feed raw food as well as some table scraps etc, I don't worm, I get their ablutions checked by the vets for parasites.
The last time I needed to worm was a year or so ago when I got back from a Europe trip. When I fed only rabbit, I had same tests done and found I need to worm dogs maybe every three years! bitches for roundworm only when pregnant and for some strange reason they would get a worm burden everytime they were successfully mated.
Make of that what you will.

How long do you freeze them for. Never heard of tape worm being in the muscle.
I freeze to keep the rabbits in condition, not so much because of parasites (never really thought about it).. a couple of days minimum.. I know freezing kills parasites so. all good there-
But I still have to de worm my dogs fairly regularly as they kill and eat their share of rats and mice. I reckon any parasites they get is from that.

I gut em, then throw in freezer in the fur for the dog and oven ready for me ,

I'm out tonight on my golf course perm to stock up again

Your dogs will love em mate, however you give them to em
