Somehow I'm in a couple of groups on faceache on fox shooting lots of guys using thermal, drones, night vision etc. Now I'll say I don't have a clue about any of these things I'm a lamp and rifle kind of guy but the ranges some of these guys are reporting foxes shot at is worrying latest over 400 yards is that possible with the new thermal, drones etc. Seems a long bloody way at night.

I think these Faceache groups are a laughing stock amongst the keepering fraternity. You can find other Faceache pages/groups whose sole aim is to ridicule them.

We are most probably in the same group(s) and I agree with you these 400 yard shots at night do sound like there’s a lot of bloody good shooting going on. Possibly they should consider competing in competitions In the daylight.

I want to know how many have they missed before hitting that one. And because they have missed in the passed theres a need to use NV or Thermal now?

Everybody misses from time to time! I definitely have missed and I only shoot out to 250 yards max. But the chances of missing must increase

Years ago around with us we use to have guys coming around using white light and taking pot shots with .22 off the back of a truck. It was a pain in the backside, by the time I started lamping everything was lamp shy.

Just like any other social media including forums like this there will be plenty of variation in what's acceptable from person to person,including abilities.
Not sure how they would be the laughing stock of the keepering community though,there's plenty of them as full of too.

I have no doubt there are some very talented shots out there, using some very good nv gear that will make those 400 yrd night shots possible, maybe it's just me, but 200 yrds at night is a bleddy long shot ! I've shot my fair share over the years with lamp and night vision, maybe a handful of them have been 150 -180 yrds but most around 80-130 yrds i would say. Can't really see the need to have to take long shots especially with Nv gear

I shot a rabbit at 150m ish with a .22 rimfire (Rugar 10/22) once.

I have tried similar distance shots hundreds of times for fun but only managed to hit what I was aiming at once

Unless the land is suited for it, I do tend to find it a bit dangerous as at 400 yards, a lot could happen unless one is sure of where the bullets are flying to after the hit or with a miss. If long range shooting is what they are after, I am sure there's plenty of ranges where you can shoot upwards of 1000 yards and even some great competitions one could take part in for the challenge.

Totally agree, seems either bull**** or if true pretty irresponsible to be shooting that far at night.

Again, depends on if you can do it reliably. If you can see clearly, know the land and your drops it isn't really any different to shooting in daylight. Whilst I haven't taken shots that far in the dark (300 tops) the only limiting factor I have is my night vision doesnt give me the clarity to get that far out otherwise I probably would if I had to.

If the land isn't suited for it you shouldn't be doing it but seriously, who would take an unsafe shot? It could be a bad shot at 50 yards with a .22. Say you shoot a deer at 100, the bullet is going through and through and will still travel a good distance however now being more prone to ricochet as it's a flying bullet that's now expanded so your saying we should never shoot anything? A backstop is a backstop wether its 50 yards or 1000 yards

That's everything I keep away from! I had a word with a friend about some pictures, normally goes without saying some things don't need to be shared, but it's these groups that give us bad press.

As for the 400yd shot, there's bragging about it with no consideration for there actions or the sport & there are genuine who first mention the remote location of a safe valley with a hill as a back stop. The latter would be more likely a target not a fox & even then I don't think most would put it on social media.

If you they want to see safe, skilled & well practiced they would do well by Thomas Haugland.

Yes, to be fair, that was a poorly worded comment. There is no doubt though an element of the fox shooting fraternity that are the butt of jokes by social media keepers pages.

I have no doubt that it is possible but I thought the whole point of thermal and nv is the fox doesn't know you are there providing the wind is right therefore if you cant get to within 400 yds there is something wrong somewhere...

I Have done that with a Catapult . you need some rifle shooting training. Have you got your Open License yet ??

The Facebook groups are typical of social media on a whole, full of absolute tosh and dreamers. You've got the "faces" who run these pages surrounded by every brown nosing boot licker on the planet and not one of them is worthy of the title foxer..!!

They rock up in all the gear, climb the five bar gate, set the rifle up on a tripod, switch on the caller, spot with the thermal, shoot with the NV, and back home in time for Love Island, foxing my arse..!!!

Having said that though moving on to your other point, technology as come on leaps and bounds and I do believe the 400 yard shots are achievable given the right conditions and that's the point, absolutely every possible aspect as to be perfect. I've been foxing a long time and I can count on both my hands the amount of times I've had those condition, so it just goes to show these people are just playing at it, and you'll only ever see what they want you too..!!
