Evening all, as the title says, the knife needs to be foldable, locking blade 4 or so inches long and capable of being held to his person by a lanyard or other device or he'll lose it.
Highly visible would therefore also be desirable. His choice is normally motivated by looks so can anyone advise a good work knife - I'm thinking Bear Grylls lockable folding knife £30 and excellent reviews. Incidentally to collect it I was asked for some formal identification of age and address - shotgun cert if you have one was suggested

Have a look at the Eka Swede 10 which is available in orange. I’ve got the black version & it’s a cracking knife. Price is £35-40 ish.

I like the look of these, but probably much too expensive
In my day that was the price of a good second hand car !!! Thanks anyway.

Cold Steel Recon 1 spearpoint. Strong, dependable, easy to open with one hand, cuts like a razor.

I believe as that he is a son and thus worth it dont worry about the dosh and have a custom Damascus bladed knife made.
Being a tree feller one of these would blow him away.
1 The Damascus blade made from 2 or three old axe heads. Old English of course.
2 Same deal but made from old chain saw bars.
3 Damascus again but forged from old chain saw CHAINS.

A real treasure.

If he climbs Gerber F.A.S.T action is nice , or twitch 2 by Sog is a real nice knife
Got a few of both

Must admit to be honest the cheaper the better. Type off job u'll always lose them anyway or u'll end up using it for all sorts of things never designed for ( screw drivers, chisels, poking things or levering things out.)

Depends wot type of cutting he does but if in commercial soft woods lots or even hard woods a lanyard can be a pain n a**e getting snagged on brash.

If he climbs most folk use serragated blades as cuts ropes easier, also that Anne open 1 handed.

Suggest an Opinel 08 Outdoor sport, come in a variety of colours lockable blade, has lanyard attachment point, built in whistle and serrated part of blade for cutting rope. Got one as an Xmas present £25 from Taunton Leisure.

A different idea might be a 'top saw' multi tool thingy.
Basically a crappy leather man but all its things are for saws.
Dunno wot colour of saws ur boy runs but it has tools for both stihl/husky ( few sockets, Allen key, torx key, screw driver Inc tuning size (if his saws still have carbs) and at groove cleaner)

Really everything u would need outside ur workshop, althou how often u need most off the tools I dunno?
Not sure where I got mine althou I've never used it, think I bought it at some forestry show ( guessing from D A Hughes as was next to his excellent chainsaw files

For the money, this Buck has one of the best blades you will find. Got one myself. Best large folder I've owned. Extremely well made knife with incredible edge retention.
Not exactly high vis but comes with a very robust belt pouch. Also it's a liner lock so one-handed opening and closing is easy and it's the best design to keep clean.
Big fan of Buck folders. Less keen on their fixed blades but their folders offer excellent value for money.
