Want to hunt in the US?

I have done it several times now, hunted and fished in Montana, fly fished in Wyoming and Colorado.
Several members on here are clearly interested in going after watching Randy Newberg and Steve Rinella, all I can suggest is see if you can get together and form a SD group.
It cuts down the cost to share hire car/fuel etc
Since I went over Llamas have started to be used, they open up many more opportunities, use them and you could stay out in the back country wilderness for 7+ days and be well fed warm and cosy, and away from many other hunters.

Just be careful who you choose, it requires a 100% commitment and a real level of fitness to deal with the sometimes very harsh rugged country, but it's an experience you will never forget, and you would have done a DIY hunt not outfitted.

I have got something on each trip, and if I can be of any help just ask away, the only thing I can't help with are GPS co-ordinates, I would get lynched if I gave that information away!

One day I'd love to get over there for a public land hunt.
Careful planning and training would be the first priority I think.
Then do as much homework as possible.
Mr Newburg's channel would be the next port of call. Loads of info on his pod casts and 'elk talk'. Applying for tabs etc..

OnX maps look bloody useful too.
Lamas look a great addition to the whole experience aswell. Get way out in the back country. Away from trailheads and vehicular access.

Lots to think about and lots of planning.

Out of interest I looked up a flight yesterday, similar cost to those prior covid times, but with one major difference, the long haul flight used to be non refundable, but Delta have now changed things so at least you could get a refund or e-credit should you book for example next year and the virus (I hope not!) stops you flying, not only that you can get a refund for your 'Tag'
But too be honest I think things would have to change a lot before I even considered returning.
I might be too old by then!

BTW, planning can start at anytime, and is good fun in itself.
Deer out East Montana, Elk out West, at least that appears to work for me!

I have hiked/wild-camped many times in Montana and dream about hunting there. quite fancy spring black bear. I have found flying to Calgary and driving over the border cheaper, may be more difficult with rifles.

Montana is an addictive state isn't it?
Your wild camping sounds very interesting.

That's interesting in relation to flying into Calgary, no issues with hire car?
I'm never taking a rifle again, I have offers to borrow a rifle whilst I'm over there should I return one day.

As you know there are no direct flights to Montana so a direct flight from London to Calgary was more conveinient, never had a problem with taking the hire car over the border.

I did a 2007 trip to South Carolina with my pal and we took two rifles and a revolver (mine held legally in Germany) through the BATF paperwork. Also two two man tents as I snore and all the other stuff you need. I borrowed a chevy van from my US pal and had 10 days in the SC to NC area after whitetails, apart from flight it was cheap as chips. The national forest campground we used for the first 5 days was free the second 5 days $5 per night and there was also a big frame tent set up by a group of guys for Thanksgiving weekend that they did every year and they said just use it and the firewood FOC because we will not be there when you are.
Who says the Americans are not a giving group?
If I could I would return the favour on high seat boar in Germany.

I'm planning on another trip out there (when allowed). I backpack, DIY hunted mule deer in Colorado last year and can't wait to get back. I would be keen to hear from others interested in going out there. I have points in both Colorado and Wyoming.

Good on you for DIY hunt, any success?
Colorado, that is some high country, I've hiked it but not hunted it.
I have been thinking about Wyoming for a hunt, but my heart is in Montana

Colorado is beautiful. I did the early rifle season in one of the high country units near Aspen. Mainly camping above 13,000ft. Pretty physically demanding. I managed to get a deer.

Altitude is a killer!
Beautiful country though and congrats on the deer.
Nice looking Elk, logistics, Llamas have to be the way to go.

Thanks. I went by myself, which I'm not sure if I'd do again. 10 days living out of backpack on top of a mountain by yourself is quite mentally challenging. Yeah I've looked at the llama thing, it could be an option for wyoming.
