Sightron S-Tac 2-10x32 or Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40?

I'm looking for an affordable scope for my lightweight 6x45 for mostly woodland stalking. I can't justify expensive glass. I like the idea of a reticle with marks for holdover (if I ever need it for shooting past 200m etc).

I was set on the Diamondback 4-12x40 BDC scope as I really like my Vortex Viper scopes and binoculars.

However I've just come across this Sightron scope after seeing it mentioned on here recently.

Will the smaller objective and smaller FOV, and reduced low light capabilities cripple it much? (I have good eyesight)

Anyone have any experience of this model?

Thanks

I have owned a 4-16x42 Diamondback HP and a Sightron STAC 3-16x42. Neither are the exact scopes you are considering but they are very similar. I would say the HP Vortex was theoretically a better scope than the one you are looking at and I was not impressed with it at all. The Sightron is certainly better to my eyes, is built better and the scope adjustments work better.

32mm Obj lens is going to be limiting to some degree but compared to a 40mm, probably not that much but I wouldn't rate either as being particularly good for woodland stalking where dense cover and reduced light are often to be found.

I still own the Sightron and moved the Vortex on as quick as poss if that helps you though.

Consider an old Swaro Habicht Nova 2.2 to 9 or similar x42 variable. For reliability, robustness and glass quality/light gathering they are hard to beat. They cost around £400 second hand.

@takbok are you firm on either of those brands?

Nikon stopped making scopes in 2019/2020 so all their products are marked down for clearance.

Uttings has a 3-9X40 for £159... made in China but so is most stuff at that price! Nikon Prostaff P3 3-9x40 Rifle Scope

If you don't mind fixed try find a meopta 6x42 armetis with 4b ret great glass ,tough and can be had cheap
They are nice scopes, and very good value especially 2nd hand. MacLeod's has one for £170.

I liked my Leupold 6x42's but I'd prefer the option of a bit more magnification now though.

Cheers for that. I find 40mm objective perfect for woodland. I'll ponder for a while before buying something.

Thanks, probably a bit pricey but will see if there's something 2nd hand on eBay etc.

Received the Sightron S-TAC 2-10x32 HHR2. I like it and think it's great value at the reduced price from Optics Warehouse. It has a simple matte black finish. The turrets aren't as nice as my Vortex Vipers but they're something I'll adjust once and forget. I like the HHR2 reticle. It seems very clear, even as I was looking through it this evening. The smaller objective and FOV doesn't seem too bad but time will tell with use in the woods.

Bit of 'tunneling' between 2-3 magnification as I'd seen from other reviews but no big deal for me.

It came with a lovely thick scopecoat too. It's nice and light at around 450g IIRC. I just need to chop my 6mm barrel down to 16" now to make the rifle more handy.

So it seems nice and solid and I'm happy with my purchase so far. It's actually a much better size for the little Sako than the 4-16x44 that I had on it before.

You drilled and tapped a Sako 75?!🤬

That being said, it looks like a good fit for the action.

Reticle maths seem a bit difficult to me according to their instructions: https://sightronusa.com/wp-content/...UCTION-TO-YOUR-SIGHTRON-HHR-GEN-2-Reticle.pdf

Assuming you have Strelok Pro or similar and can just run the load data into the reticle? If not just send me a PM and I'll do screenshots for you.

Sako mounts - every brand has to have a downside..... you won't find a lower better 30mm mount for the sako.

Reticle is easy - hashes are at 2.6, 5.6 & 9.2 MOA at 10 mag. I'll zero at about 170m for a 2" target mpbr of about 190m and use strelok to give me the ranges of the 3 additional hash marks - roughly 275m, 375m, 475m???

the 400m hash should be about right for my subsonic cartriges zeroed at 50m.
