Boar Cal

Can some one just tell me,why,243 in the head would not do,a boar,or is their skull extra thick, compared to say a fallow buck?

Mate of mine shot one in Worcestershire with a .243 (behind the ear) Dropped it on the spot.

Plenty of pigs are shot in the States with .223 . (Yes they are different to true Wild Boar but I doubt their skulls are that much different - especially with a brain-shot side on behind the eye)

(I got my 8mm approved for Boar but have yet to draw any pig-blood so am no expert at all)

No it is not against the law. There is a recommendation for .270 or above but it is only a recommendation. The way I see it AOLQ on your .243 gives you a green light.

Wouldn't want to mess with a wounded one mind especially with a 6mm

A recommendation it may be but if I didn’t have boar on my cert for a cal less than .270, ( and I don’t)personally I wouldn’t want to be caught using any of my smaller Cal’s

I have dropped a big feral wild pig stone dead (saw it drop in that millisecond of the recoil which makes the scope briefly out of focus) with a frontal brain shot with an old rusted 243. On the same day saw a slightly smaller one disappear after 1 leg shot from 308 + gut shot with a 458 win mag. (tracked it later and needed dogs to corner it). But thats another story.

Seen loads of wild boars (not feral pigs) shot with ball and large shot like LG/SSG etc. Also seen many injured with them.

As mentioned correctly in the posts above, 223 is a popular round for feral pigs. I however dont want to chance it. Last 2 outing for feral pigs was with 300 WM and 300 weatherby mag.

I suspect the “270” good practice recommendation, originates from Europe, where countries do have rules for minimum calibre, & bullet weight.

And it’s been discussed many times, that what is suitable, in the right hands, for head shooting a static pig, at 50m from a stand, is very different to shooting driven boar.

As for the use of 223 in the US, based on the videos they post, few are capable of head shooting, and dropping a static pig, and once the pigs are running, they fair even worse, mostly ;)
