Too old to start cycling @ 70?

Get an ebike, cycle the byways, invest in a suntour NCX suspension seat pillar to smooth out the bumps.

Gentle exercise over greater distance,
- both give great pleasure, and welcome assistance!
I done exactly this and it's got to be one of the best things I have ever bought, I even bought the suntour seat post, Before I had to come back away to work I was out cycling for up to 4hrs a day, I bought the ebike because my knees are buggered and thought it would help and it does, The bike I went for you still have to pedal but it assists you and makes it so much more enjoyable.

..........please don’t turn into a militant cyclist though...🙄😂😂
[/QUOTE]

Although I much prefer walking/hiking with a decent load, I have done a fair bit of cycling, done the Devon Coast to Coast and Bristol to Reading along the A&K Canal, both quite demanding but great fun, so always treat cyclists with respect and tolerance.........But!

Just last week, while traveling down a single track road with passing places, I met the “Militant Cyclist”. Traveling at no more than 15mph, I noticed a cyclist coming towards me, he was approaching a passing place. In my naivety, I though he would slow down, or even stop at the passing place, oh no, not MrMilitant Cyclist, he just kept coming at me. I slowed right down, putting my truck into the hedge, as he got near he started shouting, at the top of his voice “wow, wow, wow” and I mean shouting.

Not like me normally, but I went from 0 to 100, in a flash, as he got level he had it big time, as he got passed my truck he stopped his bike. Fcuk you, I thought, started to climb out of my truck, being grabbed by the missus, that is when the Lycra clad prick decided a gnarly 6’ 15 stone, cauliflower eared ex rugby player, not too pleased, needs to be left in peace! Never seen legs go so fast. Even the very placid missus commented “What the hell was wrong with him!”

There was absolutely no need for his tirade at me, and what was wrong with him waiting at the passing place! They are out there, I am sure he just looks for an tiny excuse to have a go at a motorist. Certainly the Militant Cyclist for sure..........I calmed down after about three days, 🤣🤣

I have to admit that even though I do very little cycling on the road I am starting to see (Responsible) cyclists in a slightly different light even though there are still plenty of idiot cyclists about who think they own the road and have more right to be there than motorists. I can also see just how dangerously inconsiderate some motorists can be towards cyclists.

...and that's the problem right there, so many cyclists start out as reasonable and rational human beings, only to be subject to numerous, in fact countless acts of dangerous driving, verbal and physical and abuse, along with near death experiences, so naturally become somewhat militant. I try and remain calm at all times, as my FAC might be at risk if I respond with a torrent of abuse to a near death experience from an inconsiderate/dangerous motorist.

There are pricks on both sides, thats just people for you.

Well after my bike being stolen during the early hours of this morning I have located another and pick it up tomorrow morning. (I have already bought a new heavy duty lock and chain in readiness. ;) )
I was with the nurse in our doctor's surgery this morning for some regular blood tests so I asked about how high I could safely get my heart beat up to while exercising. The answer that she worked out was as follows: Take 220 and subtract my age (70) which gives 150. Then for light exercise I should not go above 50 - 60 percent of that = 75 -90 BPM and for more strenuous exercise 60 -70 percent of that which works out at 90 - 105 BPM - Something that I will have to keep an eye on.

Bike theft may make your heart rate higher than that !!!!

Stick in FB, get a fitbit, or similar with a heart rate facility, tells fat burn rate, calories used, steps, miles covered etc, I find one very useful. Within the last three years I have done all the big ones in UK, Nevis, Scafell, Snowdon, and all the ones in the Lake District, covered hundreds of Mountain/Fell Miles, and lost TWO POUNDS!!!!!!

That's because your heart rate monitor/fat burn rate calculator/steps covered device weighs ten pounds..................

This is absolutely correct. I'm a complete c*%t both on a bike and behind the wheel.

OK, confession time!
I have been monitoring my weight with our bathroom scales, and I have been quite honest about things. HOWEVER while I was with the nurse today she put me on the surgery scales which I suspect are much more accurate. Our bathroom scales have said that I was down to 14 stone and about 5 pounds - The surgery scales really frightened me (Roisin the nurse described our scales as "being very kind to me")- They said that I was 15 stone and 6 pounds! OK there's no question that I have lost weight according to our bathroom scales but the weight that the surgery scales really frightened me. They make me clinically obese so that is even more reason to put much more effort and discipline into my diet and exercise program!
Sorry if I led anyone astray by giving a false weight, it really was not intentional and I really have been worrying all day about putting the truth up as it is so much more embarrassing than I initially thought!

FB, just read your most recent above post, Iam now depressed, so I'm going to sit down with a pint, single malt chaser, pork pie, crisps (walkers of course!!), pork scratchings, a large bap filled with 4 pork sausages (Greens of Longframlington!!), a sticky toffee pudding and a dark sauce, (built by me!!), and lastly a large slice of Carrot cake, ( yes also built by me), I'll teach those B@@@@ bathroom scales!!!, I suspect you will probably hear me going off with a muffled bang all the way from Pillen, or Fylde

FB,

No need to be embarrassed - we are all different shapes and sizes. Bathroom scales can be, shall we say, variable in accuracy. The main thing is that you know you have already lost 5 lbs as measured on your own scales.

Now you have a more accurate baseline to go off from the surgery, and you know you might want to lose a bit more timber in order to reach your target weight, that's all.

Stick with it! And how's the new bike working out?

I picked another pre-owned mountain bike up yesterday but haven't really had a chance to try it yet, apart from just up the road and back. Most of yesterday afternoon was spent checking it over and doing the adjustments so that it is a "comfy fit", and then I had to do a load of drilling so that I could fit an anchor ring to our back wall to secure the bike to with a heavy duty lock and chain, which is now done. Can't cycle this evening as I have a church meeting to go to so it will have to wait till tomorrow, maybe an early morning couple of laps round Hollingworth lake!

I have a slight suspicion that both our neighbours and our Housing Association might have something to say if I got one or two of them - Much as I would like to! ;)
In all honesty I have been thinking about getting a cheapish Trail Cam to fit to the wall out the back where I keep my bike (Well out of reach) in case another thieving little scroat fancies his chances!
