The perfect knife?

I like the PHK profile, but it is miles too thick.
I took to mine with a grinder and much prefer it after the modification.

This is a knife:

View attachment 208895This to me is ideal (Fallkniven PHK with black rubber handle), as Sciandally has pointed out. I do however find the standard 4 inch blade a little wanting in some situations so the extra inch on the PHK makes sense. For a shorter blade I like the Enzo Trapper 95 (wood handle on mine) which is great if just dealing with Roe View attachment 208894

I have an enzo trapper which I quite like but it’s a bit too deep for my liking. The PHK is way too thick for me.

The blade is thick but it doesn’t affect function that I can see. Why would you remove the outer lamination of the steel just to make it thinner and lose the advantage of the lamination??

Outdooredge razorbone is my choice of knife with its six spare blades that are twice as sharp as a Surgens scalpel. I’m still on the original blade that’s sorted 5 deer and still you could shave with it

I'll take a photo tomorrow when I dig it out of the car.
The blade is too thick for taking the backsteaks off - a thinner profile fits against the bones better.
As to the price - so what? If I hadn't thinned it down I wouldn't use it, and the money would be completely wasted. Now I have something I'm happy with. As for the lamination, I don't see what I've lost. The edge is what matters. I don't cut down trees, try and pierce armour or anything other than process deer in the bush and stick the very occasional pig. For this, I want a useful blade shape and good edge retention. I've got that.
P.s. I threw the plastic sheath away too - do I go to a deeper pit of hell for that?

I wouldn’t worry about a more easily damaged knife either. I hardly ever batter my knives through trees. Usually use an axe. I had an H1 which was about 5mm thick, it was half way between an axe and a knife and rubbish at being either. I couldn’t slice a tomato with it. What’s the point in that?

Hi all, I’ve been using a fallkniven f1 knife which I really like. The blade shape and thickness is great and I love the convex grind but it’s a little long. Anyone using something similar but with a shorter blade?
Here we go, have already ordered a sandwich

I wasn’t having a go at all, merely interested with the thought process. It’s your knife so crack on!! I can see your point about taking back straps off but I use a boning knife for that which is probably better still. Shame about the plastic sheath, I would have bought that off you 😉

Have you thought about just using your existing F2 but not pushing it in as far?

Failing that. The Enzo fisher has a similar profile and you can buy a blank for 30 odd quids. Could you regrind it following the same shape but make it shorter?

Or get a custom maker to just make you a shorter bladed version but that's going to be pretty expensive.

Mora do a few fillety profile knives but you didn't seem to fussed on them earlier in the thread.

Another option might be to find a kitchen knife like a Victorinox and have someone make you a scabbard?

Or maybe look at something like a bird and trout knife?

My issue with the length of my blade is that I can’t reach the end of it with my finger.

All of the other fillet type knives that I’ve found are a little too flexible, the fallkniven one is just right for thickness but a little too long.

I’ll see if I can have one made.

Bird and trout knives are a good shout but that one looks awful to hold onto.

It is so difficult to chose a knife without handling one...I was really fooled by the photo of the J.Marttini knife on the Monarch site...It looked like it would be a narrower blade than the standard Mora Companion which I thought would make it better for tunnelling out Roe and Muntjac.

Perfect proportions I thought.

It was perfectly proportioned...but it turned out like Spinal Tap's Stonehenge Mini Monoliths. They had shrunk the whole knife down and I couldn't fit all my fingers between the knops on the handle :(

if your looking knife to do Roe and Muntie have a mark zabrowski
he does a fin and feather and it’s a superb all round blade, in flat grind as well

Marc Zabroski has some great designs and his workmanship is the very best
