Cocker pup pricing

Apologies for not being specifically deer-dog related, but I’m after some advice.
My cocker bitch is in pup, and I’ve had a couple of people asking me about puppy availability & pricing for when she does drop. However, I can’t work out a fair price.

Both parents are workers, but neither are KC registered. I was thinking of £800/dog, £850/bitch, but have been told by a few people that’s too low.
What do you folks think a reasonable price is, without ripping people off? I’m not in it for the money, just to get myself an additional dog, but don’t want them snapped up cheap then sold on elsewhere afterwards.

Our last KC litter sold at 800 3 years ago, look at the KC registered priced pups and make your mind up from that.

Wait until they and the bitch are all safe and well then make your price. get your tail docking paper work in place would be a good start.

Mate honestly the market is absolutely flooded at the moment.

If you can sell non KC Reg pups to tidy homes for £800/850 I would go for it if I was you.

I bet the people saying that’s too low aren’t currently trying to sell pups are they?

Look around, there are LOTS of people trying to sell pups well past when they should have gone.

Pups 10-12+ weeks old with the breeds still having numerous dogs available.

Whilst the prices were high everyone with a bitch had bred it to anything they can and the market is totally flooded.

I know of a bloke that bought 6x 12 week old KC Reg labs a week ago for £3,000 because the breeder just needed them gone.

Personally I believe too many people have used the excuse of “If I sell them too cheap, then they will be sold on for more elsewhere”. Have your bitch scanned, that will give you a heads up on the number within the litter. May be impossible, but limit the number of prospective buyers to those you know or who are personal acquaintances of those you know. Do your research on prospective purchasers. Those you don’t know, consider drawing up a legally binding contract to be signed when the pup is to be collected. You can place what caveats you like within it, but I suggest you take legal advice in drawing it up. I have always refused to take any deposit on a pup. Expectations of both the seller and the purchaser may not always be what they have expected and litigation because the prospective purchaser has paid a deposit and subsequently been refused the sale is not unknown.

My cocker bitch had a litter last February. Scan showed 5 but only 4 made it. The waiting list was heavily overscribed, no advertising, just word of mouth. Best laid plans went West. Emergency Caesarean for the bitch, then mastitis led to massive hike in vet fees over £1100 which , we thought only reasonable to recover. Despite all, we still managed to keep the purchase price to £1,000

Good luck and don’t be put off.

Buying to sell pups on is long gone isn't really a concern anymore with the huge drop in demand, people can't even sell the pups they have bred themselves at the moment, let alone the need to worry about someone else selling your pups.

That bloke I know of that bought those 6 x 12 week labs wanted to sell them on, the breeder didn't care, breeder was just glad to get rid of them.

I had her scanned earlier, and she’s got 4 or 5. One is already spoken for, and I’ve just had a friend of a friend message me about having another one. I know of a few people who’ve expressed interest in the past if I was to breed from her, so I’ll get in touch with them first.
I did a bit of research into prices, and have settled on £900, which seems fair.

Mines in pup to I only wanted one for myself and I definitely don’t want more! Mine are KC reg I guess I’ll be lucky to get them shifted for 1k a go?

Why's he want 6, 12 week old puppies?

There is very much a 'swinging pendulum' at the moment. For KC reg, well bred it is around £1200 - £1800. I would say non-kc reg but well bred would be In the region of £800 - £1200

I’d say a lot of this is in getting to know your customers. A lady I bought off has a method where she introduces to the mum and dad before the brood arrives. Then people keep in touch and visit at key stages - after been born, a few weeks old to choose and then to collect after 10 weeks or so. That way you know your buyers and have a better chance of pups going to good home

My pet hate is seeing puppies reduced - like selling a car or pair or boots. I have seen this a lot recently and I think that it usually happens when the seller advertises the pups after they are born at maybe 2 or 3 weeks, tries his luck at top dollar pricing and then when the pups are not selling and becoming a handful at 7, 8 or 9 weeks decides...sod this I need to shift them, hence the price drop.

We sold our non KC cocker pups at £1,100. Started asking £2,000 which was common to see (and even higher) about three months ago, but I think it’s dropped back since then. When we dropped the price they went quickly. Nothing is worth more than seeing them go to good working homes so I’m glad we dropped the price. Yours sounds very reasonable. Hope this helps.

I already said in my next post, to sell on.
I know of him through a friend of ours, he’s related to them. I wouldn’t buy a dog off him myself, but we do hear of what he is

He is a dog transporter and often brings dogs over from Ireland to sell etc.

He said it’s been the same in Ireland, mad lockdown prices, except every Irishman has been breeding and then bringing the dogs to England to sell for stupid money.

Difference is, the breeder knew they were being sold to be sold on again. Breeder didn’t care he just wanted them sold and gone.
