Hi, I am from Suffolk and currently getting into stalking.

I have been hiding in the shadows on the site for a while and reading lots of information!

Currently only have .17HMR, but am looking to put in for a variation for a larger calibre soon. (probably .243 but I am still open to advice).

Welcome from Essex, .308 may be better with the ban on lead coming unless you reload yourself, although until that time nothing wrong with a 243
Where would I get more foxes with a .308 as not every shot is for a deer...!!
Besides you don't have to book when going out foxing.

I am sure if you took a slice through many sd members it would be like a stick of rock and say BDS :tiphat:

Edit, welcome to the OP......enjoy SD

Forget the .243 - too girly by far. Get a 6.5x55SE, you will not regret it!

This is what I have been reading about.

My permission is very flat for all but a few fields though. So I think the actual land it will be used on is small.

I have been told that the land is cleared to .243 with high seat. My .17 is open.

The 6.5x55SE sounds really good. But I struggle to see it would be granted! Need to get some hillier permissions maybe!

It would likely be used for as many foxes as deer too.

Very true... But I don't really understand how being turned down works.... Is that it then or can you ask again when you find a bit more permission...? What about then asking for other calibres...?

Things are changing with the advent of non-toxic. If it's good enough for a 243 it's good enough for a 30-06 and everything in between. Just ask and tell them why!

Thanks baguio, I need to bone up on the non toxic stuff so I can justify it better.

I have read people saying there will still be loads with enough energy for deer in non toxic 243?...

Its hard to know what's really true.

That may or may not be true. What isn't in doubt is that it's marginal. Go up a size to 25-06 and you're well within the law. What if the one bullet that your 243 shoots accurately isn't deer legal? Trust me, Suffolk FEO's know the score and are unlikely to argue with you on that front. Roughly where about in Suffolk are you?

Yep. Argue up the 6.5 copper suitability case and the myth problem with the 243 and copper bullets not stabilising etc…. Just hope the feo isn’t on SD?

That's true I shouldn't have assumed it would be just used for the 🦌

Not sure it really matters if they are? .. If I do enough research to come to the conclusion I need one over a 243 because of the better suitability for deer and the availability of non toxic shot then that's it...
I wouldnt apply for it for the sake of it... Better things to spend money on than ornaments in cabinets 👍😁
