Longest deer with copper ammo??

Ok lots now shoot copper and there must be lots of deer shot out there with them? I am not Interested in theories or the ethics of longer range shots in this thread at least…. But in the real world what is the longest successful shot you have made with what ammo etc…??
For what it’s worth mines 252m Barnes 130gn Ttsx MV 2962. I tend not to shoot long shots but I’d be interested in a good combination that worked to for you up to 350m or so or perhaps more???
 
370 m with a 140 grains RWS HIT out of my Sauer 404 7mm RM , on a fallow doe. It dropped on the spot…

The 2nd longest with the same combination was at 209 m on a red stag , neck shot, again dropped on the spot as you would expect…

In both cases I couldn’t close the gap anymore, due to the open ground between us.
Usually all my deer are taken at distances between 20 and 100 meters.
 
More to the point, I find the expansion of them is much less effective at closer ranges, I shot a stag last night at 40m bullet pencilled through rib cage taking out both lungs, knew the shot was good and could see the entry wound but the deer, having made an initial lunge forward as you would expect seemed to regain composure and was standing head up looking for his next move which would have been into the thick stuff. Didn’t leave it to to chance to popped a second one in his head. Exit wound from the first shot was scarcely any bigger than entry despite both lungs being well hit. I’ve had others poleaxed at 240m drop on the spot with similar shots so suspect there is a sweet spot with some lead free ammo for decent expansion.

Surely shooting through a ribcage and two air filled sponges wouldn't generate much expansion other than any fairly soft bullet? I'd expect that same result from and of the tougher or premium lead bullets.

I shot a small roe buck from about 30m through the lungs with a 150 grain SST from a 308 and it ran off and luckily stopped in a clearing about 10 mins later and I managed a head shot to put it down. The SST isn't even a tough bullet but hitting just lungs and nothing more meaty and solid just didn't cause the bullet to fragment and there wasn't really much blood at all either.

How long have you been using the SST for out of curiosity? Wonder if I have a misunderstanding of the bullet

My experience with them (witnessing a shot from a .270) is such that I wouldn't think it very usable for anything other than neck or head shooting deer and for use on smaller animals like foxes and other vermin. I've seen an SST explode on a ribcage of a deer leaving masses of gore but not an immediately fatal shot which required a follow up. On a small deer too.

Was that an anomaly? Hitting a rib?

I don't use them any more but did have good success with them in the past on a selection of deer of different sizes. This particular one I put down to not encountering much resistance and so no expansion. Only a little meat on the chest and through the lungs without hitting the heart or any major blood vessels. Just shows how variable things can be and using one example or poor performance isn't enough of an experiment to come to any meaningful conclusion and shot placement is more important than bullet choice, especially when using bullets at further ends of the performance spectrum.

Barnes ttsx 110g in .270. Consistent accuracy and good results between 200m and 250m.

Just changed to the LRX's and have shot them consistently beyond the ranges you have mentioned. The LRX according to Barnes is a softer material and has a superior BC, it bleeds velocity less and expands more reliably than lets say the GMX or the std TTSX. The 7mm with 139 LRX's @ 2950fps was perfectly capable of a 400yd shot but a 7mm rem mag with a bit more oomph with the same bullet would extend that range significantly, Been shooting the GMX out of the 30 cal at around 3400fps and it works well out to about 350-400, beyond that distance I don't know if they would expand reliably enough and haven't tried. Changed the point of impact to high shoulders so that there is resistance and they have all worked as they should. Biggest problem is getting them to sub moa to allow longer shots, probably spent close to £500 on ammo trying to find one that suits the gun..
I have a rule of thumb that when the energy drops below 1300 ftlbs that has been the limit of my shot, don't ask why but that is just my own personal limit..

im afraid that it’s down to coincidence that you had that result. All else being equal the faster the bullet is going the quicker it will expand.

Well it’s a coincidence I’ve experienced on numerous occasions with them…. Not an isolated incident. Another last night did the same. Deer died and it was fine but they don’t create much of a wound channel
