Petrol Panic Buying Observations

This - albeit FAQs from a supplier - doesn't mention any exemption for Dr's, midwives, etc.

Just out of curiosity, and to be clear i have never used red.

How long after any use of red diesel will it still show positive on a dip?

I have never been stopped and checked in my 4x4. Have i just been lucky?

Fast foward to 7.5 of this. There is a system, but it operates only in exceptional circumstances like World War III
You first have to apply for a licence from HMRC, and you have to pay the rebated fuel duty difference in advance.
It's much easier to get an FAC, or for a sinner to enter the gates of heaven.

I'm not sure on that one. Albeit it was several years ago, but working alongside HMRC when they were actively looking for vehicles illegally using red diesel, the only exception was agricultural vehicles and they were limited to their use on a public road.
I stand to be corrected if it's changed since then.
I run 20 odd vans and 2 road brushes that run on white, a lot of plant that runs on red.

I looked into the government guidance last week hoping I could run the road brushes at least on red short term which is where I found out the above about GPs and Midwives.

7.21 of the above linked guidance to be precise

7.4 sets out the type of purposes that would qualify.

  • National security
  • the continuity of emergency services and law enforcement
  • peoples’ health
  • the supply of essential goods and services, such as fuel, water, and power
  • the welfare of livestock and other animals

Most peoples’ daily use would not!

Thanks for that.
The current situation would certainly qualify as "exceptional circumstances"
Everyday is a school day as I say!

Motorways where you don't have to pay to park, and where there is room to park for the night without fear of being robbed, or your sheets being slashed, also by working in Mainland Europe there is always the chance of getting home for the weekend.
In fact in France it is still illegal for a lorry over 7.5 tonnes to be driven, certainly on the road network including autoroutes (motorways) between 2200 Saturday to 2200 Sunday. Also on public holidays. Except with a permit for "urgent goods" issued very sparingly by the authorities not "self issued".

I believe nearly the same in Germany. So as if they are out and on the road they have to then park up until legal to be on the roads again there is no benefit to making a driver work weekends as all he or she will be doing is parked up. We should apply the same in the UK which is a much smaller country in size.

I found in another country that rapeseed oil ran my diesel vehicle as well as the normal white derv it was selling for 99 cents euro per litre in the supermarket compared to 1.40 for the pump price "a purely scientific test you know". Any storm in a port.

I had BFG tokens for petrol, but not the borrowed diesel landy and did exactly the same...

In the UK, SVO is quite legal (under a certain mileage which nobody would ever record) and is around £1.35 per litre when bought in the average supermarket last time I looked.

A coincidence-I think not. However costco were selling 20l catering quantity oil for 67p/l for a very long time, now also just over £1/l as of a few weeks ago.

Top tip, mix with actual diesel for viscosity esp in winter.

Knew a guy from the nearby village who prided himself in running his old Ford Focus on used and new cooking oil.
It smelled like a chip shop when he drove past you! He ran it for years
The engine eventually suffered catastrophic failure and he removed the cylinder head to investigate. The valves and pistons all had what looked like a ceramic coating.
He replaced the dead Focus with a relatively new Vauhall Insignia from the auction market and within 2 months, it had failed and needed a new fuel pump.
Seems the new diesel models are very fussy when it comes to fuel.

a bosch pump is required, not the cheap as chips cav-lucas pumps (see what I did there...?)
