Hi recently looking a dog insurance for my new labrador pub but found many insurers not interested if working dog.
Any SD member found a helpful dog insurer apart from KC who I consider expensive?
Thanks in anticipation for any useful replies

We use Pet-Plan but looking at alternatives due to cost and comparisons, we have 2 labs, both used for picking up both same age same litter one is £50 the other £38 ???
We will be changing on renewal but unsure yet which one.

Both mine are with pet plan, only had to use it once when my cocker decided to eat a sponge. Vets sorted and sent me the invoice, no quibble from pet plan and money was paid within the week. There may be cheaper but from what I hear pet plan are one of the bests regarding getting payment from them.

If these pet insurers no your dog is working the insurance is void
But likewise, if your dog is working at the time, then the employers insurance should be covering any injuries surely? I certainly know that a friend of mine had her cocker badly injured on a shoot day and the estate's insurance picked up the considerable bill!

All mine are with pet plan, and all listed as working dogs.
last year one of mine had a serious accident, whilst out working, has been having continuing operations and treatment, not one single quibble from pet plan, and I maxed them out two years running and no shift in policy cost either.
yes you will find cheaper, I believe agria are also quite good, but I checked costs and was more than petplan.

I believe agria will not insure working dogs.was thinking of looking at petplan but did consider stating the pup as non-working until training finished and start working him
thanks Stephen

I would be surprised at that considering Basc have been pushing them on a few of the newsletters recently.
I don’t know for fact as I said I’m happy with petplan and atria came out dearer when I checked at renewal time

Both NGO and BASC are affiliated with Agria working dog insurance

We stopped insuring our dogs years ago.

We put the "premiums" into a slush fund and take the hit as and when.

Speaking to one of the Guns on Saturday, (whose premiums were £100 a month), he does the same. His ESS has recently had to have three procedures at the vets. He reckons he is still £1,000 to the good.

Same, Ive always found insurance to be a pain and would never have it again.

My dog had a wart removed from her eyelid that would impact her eyesight. After that the insurance company would not pay out for any other type of lump or growth including cancers.

Cancelled the policy and paid cash ever since, its been cheaper.

I always said the same thing, and truth is I went over 20 odd years with no cover on my dogs, they only got a policy around 7 or 8 years ago.
I had never really needed them in the past and no regrets about doing it that way.
My vets bill for the young pup last year is now well in excess of 20k, and still ongoing, that’s almost 3 times what I have paid in policy fees for all my dogs to be covered, so to say I’m pleased they are insured is an understatement.

Quite, I’m in the wrong game, vets know how to charge.
Without wishing to cast aspersions on any Vets, or indeed re-cycle previous threads. There does seem to be a two-tiered system of treatment (and thus costs) dependant on whether or not, your pal is insured.

Totally agree, the first vet I visited, that was the very first question they asked, it’s a long story I won’t go into but she was moved the next day after been left for 24hr with NO treatment as they hadn’t had the insurance details 🤬🤬

My dog wasn’t insured and I still got bent over. I was paying for the quality treatment. There wasn’t a cheaper option for the uninsured.
