410 Shotgun advice

It looks like I have a new shooting buddy, wee guy along the road moved from RSA and his grandad took him shooting but still stays in RSA, the wee guy seems polite and keen as mustard but has no adult to take him Shooting.

I was thinking of getting a 410 to sort the tree rats around our pen but wondered if I he could use it, is there any that come with an adult and child stock?

Can anyone recommend one of the cheaper brands of over and unders for this as I’ve only really shot berettas but don’t want something that’s going to fall to bits. Also I guess with the advent of non-toxic you are really writing the gun off long term as no one will want them after that and I don’t want to invest in something that will be useless.

Have a look at Turkish manufacturers,a lot of them do a youth stocked gun. Adult size also available for the same weapon so you can have a go and see how you get on!

I personally use Eley Trap cartridges,the 14 gram 7 1/2 shot size in 67 mm case. They'll deal with anything you point it at. Good luck to both of you

Iv got a Kofs 28b and it’s absolutely fantastic value for money. Used it myself on game too more versatile than a .410 imo. It was originally bought for my other half who is tiny so it’s a bit short for a full grown man but otherwise an excellent purchase I think £400.

Yilditz amongst others do Youth versions of their small bore guns. Not sure if they come with both stocks or as a choice of one or the other.

I am with Rasputin on this.

A .410 is a hard gun to shoot with and for a novice bairn, it may lead to them becoming disheartened very quickly.

I would also, would go for a 28 Bore as 'beginners' gun.

20b have the stock cut down and light loads, he will only be aiming not swinging.
Save the cut down piece and refit it when he grows.

Another one here for a 28. More than suitable for a youngster to use and far more efficient than the 410. I've got both and only use the 410 for humane despatch now and the odd rat or squirrel in the garden but in truth, they are very limited compared to the 28.

28 bore is a lovely but rather pricey cartridge, I have a lovely 28 bore s/s which points beautifully, I taught my wife to shoot clays with it and I've shot driven grouse with it

True 28b I believe. It’s a very sweet little gun. The triggers a bit rough compared to my proper guns but for the money it’s lovely.

.410 was the mutts nuts at the start until someone chips in with a 28 .SD gold .

410 is the hardest gun to shoot in the shotgun range. Apart from small size, why would it then be an ideal beginners gun - and cartridges are v expensive.

Realistically, .410 and 28 bore should continue to be fine for vermin/clays using lead cartridges - unless there is a complete lead ban, in which case we are all f***ed.

However, I doubt the ammunition manufacturers will be able to produce economically viable non-lead cartridges for game shooting, especially if you have to increase the shot size by 2 (i.e. go from 6 to 4) and see what that does to the pattern with a reduced number of pellets.

Same potentially applies to 16 bore, purely on the number of 16 bore shotguns around.

Range appropriate they can hit anything a 20nbore etc can , itsconlyvas you get out further big gaps in the pattern come into things

Don’t manbi pambi the kid and duck tape a 12 to his shoulder .No need to go the time honoured method of starting small ffs .
Whats wrong with people .If the kid gives up with a .410 he’s not cut out for the hunting life .
Everyone I know started off with a small bore and progressed .

I have silver pigeons in 12 bor, .410 and 28 bore. The 28 bore is by far the most satisfying to shoot, especially on clays. The shot patterning is without holes and the weight and speed of swing with mild recoil is a dream. But having said that I did shoot only 12 bore for a long time so feel the differences.
