Lord Dubs...the gypsies friend...

Is there any chance you could have been dealing with an Irish traveller and not been aware of it?
Actually, thinking a bit more, I’ve had two non-dreadful experiences with travellers. One bare knuckle boxer who owned a scrapyard next to a property we used to own asked for money to do something we asked him. We paid, he did it.

One old traveller the locals called “king” came and looked at our relaid cricket field. He seemed interested. We had a chat, then I mentioned him to the club committee who immediately installed anti-gypsy fencing. Nothing happened…

I am no supporter of anyone who flagrantly breaks the law, trespasses or threatens violence against home owners, tenants and landowners but some of the comments on here - come on, we can do better than that.

I know the criminality associated, I have investigated losses relating to nearby ‘encampments’. Some acquaintances have been driven nuts, some have a very clear transactional relationship once they knew there would be severe consequences for some local ringleaders if they stepped out of line. Ive worked with some from that background who joined my profession, trying to better themselves and be part of society. They are human beings.

I dont think we can (as a society) have it both ways. We cant keep ‘moving them on’ and complain when they rock up on someones property. Provide the facilities, or at least dont make planning so ridiculous, keep them there and give kids chance to go to school, where they might get an education and contribute.

Nothing will change while they get moved from site to site.
Right so here we have these poor folk who are penalised by society. You want to provide them with facilities so that the don't keep getting moved on. I feel so sorry for them with 40-50k worth of vehicle and a caravan worth more. If they put that into a house, stayed put and paid taxes, I may have some time for them. As it is they keep moving even from council site to other places, why? It certainly isn't to do a proper job, it's to keep one jump ahead of trouble with the law.

Those days are long gone for the vast majority of Irish people.

They are most often referred to as "Travellers".

Knacker is seen as a degrogatory name by most Irish people unless used when referring to someone's occupation from times gone by which is explained in this tribute.....

When over in County Wicklow, every Irish person I was acquainted with kept referring to Knackers. In my innocence I took it to mean receivers of deadstock or last legs animals. I was laughed at a few times until someone enlightened me, "Tinkers,. Gyppos, Knackers is what we call them thieving b......s.Mind that was 26 years ago. Since then most of them seem to have.migrated here. I wonder if the huge camp with the odd dead dog lying in the road is still on theWicklow/Dublin road, was about 80 vans on the verge then.

This happened in Camden in London.

Notwithstanding where one sits with this thread - it has (to my knowledge) happened.
What happened?

The people the facility was built for destroyed it to sell the plumbing fittings for profit and were convicted in court?

It’s a way of life the vast majority choose and want, I am told. Won’t surprise some am sure the level of crime involved by some and the historic efforts made to infiltrate their society.

That's a long time ago, attitudes have changed.

Just thinking back to my youth, it's surprising how much has changed. The travelling community then followed the work eg. Spud picking, fruit harvesting, beet singling and knife grinding. Never heard of anything going missing except for the odd rabbit. There were always seven or eight Bow top or Reading Vardas every early Autumn came to the same place to pick spuds. Horse drawn vehicles with folk of the same hue as Indians, they came they worked they went, and you wouldn't know they had been there. Now you see every shade amongst the travellers, even blondes. Then their hair was black and the ladies coiled it up on the side of their heads, all very reminiscent of Munnings painting but without the fine dress.

I reckon you'd defend adolf and pol pot if they were still around, just so you could have a troll 😂

Yes they would have destroyed the building, for pipes, for wire, for fun, I've witnessed them do it first hand, on more occasions than I care to remember 0, and leave a pile of excrement behind to boot.
They generally defecate where they stand, I once watched a man walk across a yard and barely break his stride as he took a dump, in full view of some feral kids.

And seeing as you're so proud the Irish government gave them ethnic minority status in 2017, the UK gave them that in 1988, and by God they've used it since.
But then, the Irish love the traveller 'folk', as long as they aren't in Ireland 😂

Latest figures for travellers on the UK?
No one actually knows, but it's somewhere between 1~300 thousand, Ireland has 'maybe' 30000.
So you're not that daft are you 😜

Sorry, do I know you?

You seem to be very confrontational for someone just entering the discussion.

Every time I’ve had the misfortune of dealing or hearing of travellers it’s been because they are scum…leaving a mess, stealing and generally making a nuisance of themselves….they could self police but don’t seem to bother - they hide behind a “way of life” to allow them to break laws.

About time they were sorted out.

That's the difference between proper gypsies and tinkers. They're completely different. One a group that's been itinerant for 1500yrs or so, and the other about 350yrs.

No you don't know me, and you don't know travellers either.
Plus I've been in the thread longer than your fawning posts, so it just goes to show you barely read what others say.

Go back to your echo chamber where travs still Potter about in horse drawn trailers and never steal anything.
The reality is rather different.

Here's a bit of info about Irish travellers and their unique status, not a compelling read but interesting none the less.

The President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins has recently attended funerals of traveller people in a private capacity as a friend and admirer of them.

But then again he is a man of the people.

We used to have lines of Caravans, Lorries Vans, parked either side of the road, they arrived, worked hard in the fields, it was for the Blackcurrant picking by hand. As children we worked with them for the pocket money. My father used to say you leave them alone, they leave you alone, he was right. Don't recall a single theft from the farm. Along came Thatcher & wanted cash jobs declared & taxed. Then came mechanisation. Scrap then became the main source of income. That too has changed. If you keep taking away these folks source of income away, a different mindset soon follows. Like all sections of society, there are good & bad. I know a fair few travellers, some are welcome in my house, some I don't want in my yard.

Michael D. is a champagne socialist if ever there was one. When originally elected as President part of his campaign undertakings was that his would be a single term presidency. Once he had his feet under the table and enjoyed the luxury and the deference afforded him as the President, a total volte face, and not a trace of shame. If he had lived up to his word I would have some time for him, as it is his cringeworthy left wing pronouncements prove that as an electorate we care little about the presidency. He is man of the left wing of politics not the people.

They can do whatever you are happy with in their homeland...Ireland. Your president can go to as many of their funerals as he wants...the more the better....in Ireland. I'm sure they are a marvellous addition to the economy, traditions and culture of their home....Ireland.

We just don't want them lying, stealing and fouling here thanks very much. Where they go, crime follows. They are so good....you keep them.

I could list dozens of positive interactions I've had with travellers in business, sport and social settings.

I could also list some bad interactions I've had with people who were not travellers, some of them are people in positions of trust or high profile business people from Cork that I would not trust the radio in their cars.

It takes all sorts to make a world and none of us are perfect.
Cool story bro.
