Why any of us would openly accept/invite legislation limiting firearms (loose interpretation) on the basis of a single incident (of apparent mental health) is puzzling to me. It’s like turkeys voting for Xmas. It wasn’t long ago the powers that be were looking to ban 50 cal rifles….what the hell for I have no idea, absolutely zero precedent for it…seemingly out of the blue which is terrifying. I see blowpipes have just been banned for some mysterious reason. I have never heard of an incident involving one, it seems people are sat around dreaming things to ban, let’s not make it easier 🤣.

If it isn’t becoming quite obvious that Boris and pals (and Christ knows about labour) simply do not have our interests at heart then I don’t known what would make it so, we need to fight every battle like it is our last IMO.

I think blowpipes were officially banned a couple or three decades back - caught up in the same "Battle Orders" hysteria that caused the then senior minister, on discovering their advert in a copy of Combat & Survival Mag. that had been discarded on the train he was commuting on, to bring about the banning of all sorts of items purely because they looked lethal and may frighten the horses...

Hope my hammers are safe from licensing = they're very very lethal in the wrong hands and I'd hate to see them on the streets being misused by inner city drug-gang yoots

Dont know why im replying, anyone who finds themselves here this may be useful for a pub quiz or should you find yourself on a games show and something from this leads to a correct answer I would like 5% please

Anyway, it fires a pointy thing should it be licenced?

Should probably ban knives, sharp sticks whilst we are at it. Do we draw the line at paracetamol?

Could you tell those chimpanzees to stop poking sticks down holes to chow termite too, it's not like it's a tool.

Anteaters need there tounges shortening to help the ant population.

May have gone off on a tangent.

I have put my longbow in the post. Wish I'd never seen this post. But felt compelled to reply to someone requesting increased beaurocracy and nonsense.

(Are you having issues with poachers using crossbows? Or has there been something in the news I have not seen)

If its come from a mental health issue they would have used the next nearest thing to hand unfortunately. Sad but true.

John,

Are you REALLY trying to compare a knife, to a high power cross bow ?
...Oh, modern crossbows re high power? I was hoping they were just large caliber....! (Or was it long range, I forget....?)

My research into period warfare at the time when crossbows WERE the weapon of choice saw some very surprising results on HOW powerful the military crossbows were, and as a result how long it took to reload between bolts.
Anyway - I hope they don't also ban bullet bows in with this nonsense - esp, when the ONLY image I have seen of this possibly Sikh teenager with his crossbow seems to show a type that is commonly referred to as "pistol" sized

In an ideal world, crossbows wouldn't be illegal but there would be some method (legislation being the most obvious) to ensure they didn't fall into the hands of someone who might do harm with one.

There's a couple of ways the government do that with other things. For firearms and shotguns you need a certificate, part of which looks at your suitability and part of which now asks your doctor to say if you suffer with any condition that is relevant. For air guns/rifles, (not Scotland) you have to keep them locked away so minors can't get hold of them. There's various age restrictions too of course. Neither is totally suitable when applied to crossbows.

But that is, if anything what should be happening. Keeping them out of the hands of those not responsible, whilst not restricting anyone else's freedom. A good trick if they could figure out a way to do that with any chance of success.

Not heard that argument, though around my area at the time it was becoming increasingly difficult to nip out for a pint of milk & a fresh loaf of wholemeal without roving bands of pygmy's peppering you in the arse from 80 feet away with poison darts...
Ahah - that would be the little-known Faquarwee tribe en route from their traditional hunting grounds back to their mud-hutted village in Newcastle then.

Sell a lot of crossbows overhere along with bows used for hunting, far more skill required than rifles.

The nanny state again😈

This incident was a mental health issue, if we focused on that aspect me "might' learn something.

Wasting hours of Police time on a licensing regime is unlikely to be cost effective, alas the Police are unable to detect rouge officers within there ranks😈

Interesting segue.
Seems valid to me. Both are vetting systems operated by the police (or frequently not operated in the latter case).
I never understand why the police are always so keen to have new laws to restrict citizens when they are unable (for whatever reason) to enforce the existing laws properly. Surely more rational to focus on doing the current workload rather than constantly trying to add to it.
