I’ve noticed on previous threads people asking about home made chiller units. I was lucky enough to enquire a stand alone fridge that had stopped working. After changing the fuse in the plug 🤣 I now use it as a make shift chiller. After a successful morning Sunday I have managed to put it to good use with these 2 beasts.

Hi there, looks good to me; quick question …..

I’m looking at one of these for me and a mate to share ( might have a deer in it a few times a year….) how do you go about hanging the deer? Do you look for a ‘safe drill’ location in the top and use a eyed bolt to hang an S hook off?

Interested as to how you get them to take the weight.

I run a metal bar through the top secured in by 2 bits of wood glued either side with some industrial type adhesive. I havnt drilled into the fridge itself at all. I’ve only had roe and munty in there but I’m not entirely sure fallow would fit.

Thanks for that, I’m thinking that in order to take the weight of a fallow I’d have to take the top off the fridge, see a clear way to the insulation - drill down and then through, using a steel bar at the top with an eyed bolt nylocked into the bar, with plenty of silicon sealant to air/ moisture seal the hole….. then said S hook….

Alternatively a ‘frame’ in the top that can’t fit beyond the internal mouldings….. with glue etc…as you’ve done

Anyone else any advice? We’re looking for a second hand commercial or drinks fridge, to take maybe two fallow at most….. ( we’re not that good)

I have an old drinks fridge that I've used for hanging a couple of fallow at a time. No holes were drilled, just a suitable bar wedged across and secured with blocks of wood. It's such a short span that you don't need a major feat of engineering to keep the rail in place.

Hi Andy
This thread might be of use think there are a few threads containing members different set ups that might be helpful .

And so would I 👍

I just drilled a hole through the sides and shoved some wardrobe hanging rail through and taped each end to stop it slipping.

A wooden rectangular frame of 2"x2" on each side (inside), that a square bar sits on, then hang S-hooks

The top and bottom lengths are full depth (door to back wall) of the chiller. The vertical lengths, sit on the bottom lengths to spread the load/weight on the chiller floor, then the top horizontal sits on top. A few brackets to hold it together and varnish, so that it is easy to clean.

I posted this awhile ago, tried to transfer post doooh... 6x2 uprights cut exactly to fit, this has worked very well for many years.

I use a larder fridge, and it works well for my stalking (pretty much just munties, but you can kick a fallow doe in there). I’ve got a couple of eyed bolts through the top with some threaded bar between to hang carcasses from. It hardly registers on the smart meter, and now I’ve fitted a USB-powered fan in there too, works really well. (There is usually a salad tray in there too for the blood…).

Made myself an A Frame out of aluminium box section, fits on to any of the shelf ridges and means the heavier the beast the more it wedges itself in. Plus if it’s only a small animal I can still have a shelf in the top for beer. Saves drilling holes and risking damage and degrading the insulation

Did you have to put any sort of sealant round the eye hole bolts?

Yes. I used the biggest washers I could find, and a load of silicone underneath them. There’s a length of baton right across the top with the two bolts going through it too so it spreads the load more.

I just did a Tefcold 1380, using an idea that I saw on here.

20mm Low density chopping board, cut to size then drilled for a bit of hanging rail. Then just use the existing shelf rails.

No need to drill the casing and compromise the insulation or puncture something critical.

I rammed the drilled out plugs into the rail to soften the edges.
