Export of Rifle to South Africa

I'm toying with the idea of exporting my 375H&H to South Africa on a permanent basis, as I spend quite a bit of time there. I've had a look at HMG website regarding export permits, and the red tape is starting to give me a nose bleed already! I know there are people who will organise export, so I'm hoping someone on the site has some experience, and can recommend a company.

Thanks very much!

I looked into this a couple of years ago to avoid the hassle. Permanently exporting a rifle is the same process as a torpedo. But doable if you have 4 hours to waste. Then in SA you have to live there for over 90 days to apply for temporary residency. Then do the competancy course over several days and pass the tests. Then apply for gun licence and you'll only get one rifle and one shotgun unless you're a dedicated hunter or qualified PH. Then it can take two years to be processed. They're slower than Devon & Cornwall !

You'd still have to get permanent export license from UK and get it onto their license for them to collect at Joburg. Then you would only be able to hunt with him/ her.

So far I've had two quotes from two companies who do this all the time. Both around the £2,500 mark, which includes the SA import duty, and six months for the paperwork.

Going off the idea!

I played with the thought to export a rifle to SA as well but, as you pointed out, it’s not worth the hassle nor money. Instead, my PH, a good friend of mine, locally purchased a Tikka T3X for me and put it on his ticket. I paid for it and mounted one of my scopes with a decent QD mount. Good luck!
