Issues With Importing Eggs/Poults France

It may be I have missed a thread or two on here but 2 of the local shoots I am involved with are now in danger of having no poults delivered due to Avian Flu issues in France and DEFRA restricting imports, talk now of people charging £10-15 a poult How is this affecting others, also looked on BASC site ( Of which I am a member) I can’t find any mention of it

Must be the only shortage not linked to the war in Ukraine ( Special Military Operation, for the Russians on our site)

We managed to secure ours at £5 per poult but I’ve seen folk wanting ten pound plus on face ache .I sincerely hope these people get stuck with there birds and next year me years moving forward have no customers. On another note a lad was posting on there blatantly stating he had some come from France is this legal I thought all import was stopped?

I know of one large shoot in my area who have cancelled this coming seasons shoots as they are unable to source any polts be a few more I recon for many the effects of lockdown for the last 2 years plus the now shortage of eggs and polts will mean the end for many

This last week I was my employer guest at a "Liveried Company" clayshoot held at H&H shooting ground. In the welcoming speech, the MC stated that the Gamekeepers Welfare Trust was benefitting from the proceeds of the day because 63 shoots were curtailing their season due to shortage of birds.
That's a lot of lads out of work, hopefully the estate can keep them on in some sort of role until things ease up. Can't help thinking though,if they kept laying flocks they wouldn't be in trouble.
So much for making it cheaper to run a shoot by buying birds in.

Checked BASC site again today used the News drop down no mention of shortages/DEFRA or what actions BASC are taking, astonishing, must be the largest issue to hit game shooting since CV19

There’s a lot of shoots not going to be shooting this yea, France are happy to export chicks and eggs from 4th June but DEFRA want 90 days after that, lots of unscrupulous game farms now doubling the price of poults, ours have now gone from £4.10 to £9 just because they can.

Not much that BASC can do about the situation.... Not much of a cost-saving with importing eggs or d/o from the continent but they do provide some quality strains of birds to the market and gene pool. Hard times ahead with supplies of wheat in question and bird supply. I would give a warning of caution though. There will probably be some very late birds for sale this year.... use caution with late poults, if the weather is poor in the autumn, they never develop well and are a poor size and do not perform well all of the season.

Hopefully people will remember who did what and for how much when we get through this season, the need for a more sustainable ” Home grown” industry should be more apparent now you would like to think

Home grown fine BUT feeds going up weekly electrics on the same tangent as is gas I can see alot of shoots failing to secure poults for the coming season

Hmmm. From a land far, far away (NI) I know of a number of shoots large and small, where the decision to pretty much close down this year has already been taken. Our own informal little shoot has "reserved" birds with a never-before up front 30% deposit so fingers crossed. Personally I rarely lift the gun to a pheasant now but I do really enjoy the vermin control aspects. Sadly yet again when coupled with substantial rises in feed and energy costs this does not bode well for the future of our sport - I imagine most of the shootng estates derive the main source of income from pheasant/partridge shooting supplemented by deer stalking - take this income away for a year and as with any industry faced with a loss of income for a year, they are immediately on their back feet. I feel particularly for those gentlemen and ladies employed on these estates where invariably wages are low and "tips" are a significant part of income. Tough times ahead.

i did hear the other day the 90 day ban on imports has been down to a guy in defra whos name wasnt mentioned
but hes a bit of an ANTI and mates with our old friend Mr packam. wild justest went though all the legal paper work
and found a loophole to stop the eggs/poults from coming into this country
the game farms are now shipping all over Europe and because we came out with brexit they used the 90 day excuse
nearly no birds this season
to be honest this might be all rubbish but it came from a game bird farm owner who i know and his convinced its true

The above would not surprise me 1 bit.
They have been pressurising ferry companies for ears not allow game eggs or chicks .

The power these pressure groups nw have with social media is unbelievable and then when u add just a couple of anti's in he right/wrong positions they really can screw things up big time.

Really we should be looking to be far more self sufficient with more smaller game farms.
I know i always bought of the local game farmer but he did source all/most his day olds from france the last few years

we always buy x layers from heart of England and have done for years
two of our guys rear pheasants, partridges and ducks on a smallish scale (20-25000) birds
so we have ducks and partridges from them
this year they have done only ducks as no partridge day old,s available

Depends if the "home grown" gun can afford (or at least be willing to afford) the increase in a syndicate or a days shooting.

It's all well and good telling people to support British products/services while British wages haven't been going up in line with every other cost faced by British workers.

Call me old-fashioned or even naive but why have so many eggs and poults been coming from France for what appears to be some considerable time? Are the costs incurred with local production so substantially greater that it is cheaper to import both? If so there is/was something clearly wrong with our domestic rearing industry.
Just saying.
