PSA prostate test

Had a PSA test last week as my libido had rapidly nose dived....

Results today of 0.57 which while its comforting to confirm cancer isnt the problem is this a 'getting old' thing I'm 51?

Hoping someone's had similar..... strange group to be asking that question but I dont have any other social groups to ask in.

TIA

Actually its a good thing to bring up! Its a taboo subject for lots of blokes but a major killer.
Totally agree, I actually went to my Drs two weeks ago asking her to put a finger in my Arris... I was that worried, what people need to remember is - they don't really do that anymore as its not an accurate way of detecting cancer, always a blood test now apparently.

Just not sure where my inner 'stud' has gone..🤔

56 never had 1 but they're sending me a bowel cancer test kit due to age .
I'm afraid once you hit 50 + they want to fiddle, prod and poke in no particular order😱
Good luck with the test mate 👍 luckily we have had a weekend of parties and family get togethers so basically I've been tipsy since Friday so didnt dwell on it too much about making the call for results this morning.

Dont always think the worst .
From aged 45 years onwards I had several high PSA readings .
There are many factors what can affect this , BHP, UTI or just an incorrect test

Yes it's a getting old thing, had the test 4 years ago clear for cancer but have an enlarged prostrate do you find you need to
urinate more often especially during the night ,that was is my problem, but I,'m considerably older than you.

I had a GP thumb up my bum part way through first lockdown year, he found a hard area on the prostate...a week later the Oncology consultant did the same...two days later I had a MRI scan (take ear plugs) and a week or two after that a Transperirneal biopsy (that makes your eyes water).

Indeterminate conclusion but no cancer found...6 months later....repeat of blood tests, MRI and Transperineal Biopsy (still made my eyes water) no cancer found.

My Prostate is apparently enlarged to twice normal size, which has the negative effect of slight numbness and not feeling whether you have finished peeing. You have to consciously make sure.....I guess it is the reason some old men smell of pee!

Now on watching brief of 6 monthly PSA blood tests.

Good luck on your results....apparently something like 80% of 80 year old men have enlarged prostate /cancer...and more men die with it, than from it.

You shouldn’t need the blue pill at 51 years . You can naturally increase your testosterone levels by doing regular weight training. Doesn’t have to be really brutal but any High Intensity type of training will help considerably. Creatine supplements will help your ‘appetite‘ for the weight training and CQ10 will help with energy levels / food conversion , which reduces as we age.
Try it….you’ll notice a difference…….if you haven’t done a lot of intense exercise you might be a bit stiff at first……

Disagree. The SD membership is predominately male, many in the age group where BPH is an issue. And we share info well.

Welllll... my doctor quoted how many false negatives and positives the PSA test throws up and declared that digital assay of the prostate's roughness, in conjunction with the blood test, is a safer check.

Certainly there is a chap in our village that had multiple negative PSA tests over a number of years, continued to have flow issues, was finally biopsied and later found to be stage 4. He has survived [but has a "teddy bear"] and is now a campaigner for all blokes not to be complacent about getting checked if symptoms persist.

That is comforting

And so to my experience: Always peed quite a bit by night. But recently the volume has been dropping off and it has been more difficult to establish when I am finished. So spoke to my doc 10 days ago [who was retiring that week] and asked what should happen next: defo bloods and rectal exam.

She asked if I had a preference which doctor in the group saw me for the latter. Not really I said, but perhaps the ladies have smaller hands? Duly made the appointment and attended surgery today. I think my old doc has a sense of humour.

The lady doctor I saw today is a keen gardener: I spotted her PC screen saver as I entered her room. It is a wonderful image of her vast and perfectly manicured garden. Spotting that, I glanced down at her hands and noted short nails and strong stubby fingers. She has clearly never needed to buy a dibber and probably commits all her greenhouse seedlings to the garden by hand, every year.

The good news? Prostate is enlarged but smooth to the touch apparently. Pharmaceuticals can probably reduce that...

I've had the digit up the arris treatment... not sure how the doctor managed it with both hands on me shoulders though :-|

Whilst any rapid change should be looked at, its not unusual to suddenly realise we arent the virulent young bucks we once were.
At 51 you have on average , half the testosterone you had at 20, genetically , some men have more (the bald ones usually, believe it or not !) and some have less.
Its widely accepted that if youre still sporting a full head of hair in your 50s (like myself) its probable you have had, and will have lower test than the average.
TRT is one answer , but GPs are very reluctant these days to give hormone replacement to men , or women for that matter , in the UK, due to cost more than anything else.

An enlarged prostate comes along at this age too, trouble peeing ect, there are drugs available to calm it down some, but again, it seems GPs are reluctant to give them out err, willy nilly.
There is a herbal supplement called saw palmetto, which has helped me greatly.

Sorry but thats just plain wrong, you cant 'create' test by training , rather the opposite, your body uses it up with exercise.
If you have low test to start with, your balls arent going to suddenly kick back into action because you start doing some lifts, and creatine is just a repair protein.
There are supposed supplements that are vitamin based that profess to increase test, I dont think any of them are worth wasting money on.
Plus to say 51 is too young for viagra ect, makes you wonder exactly what age its benefits are aimed at , 70 + ??
