Bloody grass seeds!!!

Just had this delight removed from the ear drum (which is now slightly damaged as a result) of my smallest spaniel. I emphasise the “smallest” bit as her ear canal isn’t that wide, she’s a tiny spaniel, bloody things. And that’s from being super careful. She’s a lot happier now thankfully. 3FC00045-57D0-43B4-BF72-2290BFE25242.webp

Yes, pain in the a--e, ear and everywhere else. The seeds (Bromes?) get in the skin and migrate under the skin. Abscesses can appear and need a vet visit. I get my Cockers hair cut into a 'skinhead' in early July, prior to dogging in, so I can spot the seeds easier. Touch wood as I've not needed a vet yet.

Ive had serious bother this year! Eyes and seeds right up between toes that have started working into the skin.

Not a day goes by that my springer doesn’t get grass seeds in his eyes at this time of year. I’ve bought a couple of boxes of saline pods from Screwfix and keep them in both cars and the game bag, only 25p a time. Prior to that it was £150 to get his abraded cornea sorted.

never knew seeds could cause such a problem! what seeds are they?
Lots of seeds, grass and barley awns are the worst, the hairs on them can allow them to migrate in the body, so that the discharging hole you think is an abscess from say a bite, is due to a seed that is a long way away. As in the cocker above

My cocker had one a few weeks back. £160 on a Saturday morning.
My usual vets we’re not interested in helping me. I told them that my dog was getting aggressive and I have children in the house.
They just said not their problem and to call someone else!
Won’t use them again!

Found a lump on about the size of a plum on my older cocker’s tail about a month ago.
Got some gloves on & kitchen towel as a catcher’s mitt, then gave it a gentle squeeze towards what looked like an opening….
Out shot a delightfully smelling mix of blood, chunky green pus, runny yellow pus and, eventually, a big old grass seed.
I got it all out & kept it clean (saline flush then hibiscrub & a dressing), and mercifully it’s healed right up.

Yep Foxtails Barbed Grass seeds . My springer was obsessed with licking her left paw. had a look and found a small circular hole between her tows and a red swollen lump further up her paw near her ankle. gave it a squeeze and out popped the offending foxtail seed as per Finbars picture. Thankfully no trip to the vet .
